My Japan Loot (Plus, a CONTEST)

Japan Haul

Don Quijote or Donki  to Tokyo residents (shortened for Don Quijote), a famous discount chain of stores in Tokyo Japan was my first stop when my family recently traveled there on a holiday.  I find it the equivalent of Target in the US where you can find cosmetics, electronics, clothing and grocery items in one store, all packed from floor to ceiling in their own distinct manner.

I knew that I could get my cosmetics fix in this one stop shop without the hefty price tags in department stores.  They also extend a 8% tax free discount to tourists so it made your guilty purchases a bit sweeter.

Donki Purchases:

Biore Cleansing Oil Refill

Biore Cleansing Oil refill and bottle

I mentioned in my Instagram post that this is one thing I don’t want to run out of — and I found the refill! (That’s a “Hallelujah!” moment!) Best of all, it comes with a spout for no-mess spills.  You simply empty the contents in the bottle and you just saved yourself precious bucks until your next purchase.

NewBorn Eyebrow Pencil

image

newborn-1
Favorite Eyebrow pencil that is 3-1.

This pencil is not too hard or soft, it dispenses the right amount of color and it comes with a matching brow powder and spoolie all in one pencil.  The powder is hidden in the twist side portion of the pencil where the spoolie is.  The tip is angled so you can really make fine hair strand strokes to create natural looking brows.  Love the design!  My favorite shades are B5, and B6 which is always out of stock.  It is similar in color to MAC’s Fling and Lingering.

Aqua Peel Moisture Peeling Gel

image

What it is: It is an exfoliating gel that removes dry flaky skin without the harsh ingredients.  It’s 90% water, Fragrance free, Color free, Mineral free, Preservatives free, Contains Collagen, Hyaluronic acid, Squalane and Royal Jelly.  Pump one time and apply to freshly cleaned DRY face and rub it in for 20-30 seconds and see the flakes come off.  Rinse off with water and continue with your skincare regimen.  Your skin will love you for it.  Use it 2x/week only.

Cure Water Skin Treatment

image

Used by factory workers in TOYO who were experiencing extremely dry hands from opening cardboard boxes.  It is lightweight, creamy and when rubbed between the palms of your hands, it forms water droplets to indicate the moisturizing properties are working, and is absorbed quickly.   It contains silicon.  The small tube is handy to carry in your purse.

La Roche Posay Hydraphase

image

Good for normal to combination skin, it infuses the face with water and keeps it hydrated.  I like the pump it comes in, when you’re running low, the see through bottle will indicate how much you have left.  It moisturizes without the greasy after feel.  I would say this is very similar to Embryolisse moisturizer.

La Roche Posay Effaclar Mat

image

This is a good moisturizer for oily-combination skin, it does what it says, skin is mattified and feels like satin.  No primer needed, go straight to the makeup application.  It fills up your pores but be careful if yours are really large, it leaves a very thin film that fills up those unwanted lines and gaps.  I’m always out of this often.

Shiseido Anessa UV Sunscreen

image

A friend suggested to me that this is her favorite sunscreen, it’s not thick, very light and gives you protection.  She said that this can be worn underneath makeup without the flashback.  I may have to switch from my heavier sunscreen and use this instead.

Department Store purchases

MAC oil control lotion

image

I purchased this simply because it was in front of the MAC cashier at Takashimaya Department store and when I read it was oil control, I bought it and it was in a trial size tube.  I tried it but it doesn’t really control the oiliness, it only acts like a primer and makes your face oil free for a few hours.  I was told to use it constantly to realize its effects.   Hmmm…  I have only tried it twice.  I’ll use this when I’m travelling and see if there is a difference.

Hakuhodo brushes

image

These brushes are my favorite of all time simply because it’s made of sable and goat hair, which makes makeup application so effortless and seamlessly blended.  You have to at least buy 1 to see the difference.  The 3 brushes above are their bestsellers, I use the 2 face brushes for blush and powder and contour.  The pencil brush is perfect for putting eyeshadow or eyeliner underneath the eyes or on the upper lash line.  Love love love!  Upon arriving home, I realized I bought the same J 5521 brush that I also purchased from a previous trip.  Talk about fatal attraction.

MAC 196

image

I was drawn to this brush because it’s curved and very dense.  I’ve tried this for my foundation application and it gave my skin an airbrushed finish.  It’s just difficult to clean because of the curved design but it works like a dream.  Best trick I learned is to use this brush after you’ve laid down your foundation with a square synthetic brush and use this to buff away and make your application seamless.  Your skin will be selfie ready.

How they see Acie Natural Look 3

I went to the Jing Monis Salon for my 3rd Makeup look and I was assigned to AlexJ De Lara.  I requested for the same “natural” look and this time I had a photoshoot to attend to so it was just perfect to get my hair and face done where I will be photographed professionally.

Using the same before photo since I always forget to take a before photo.

Subtly blended neutral colors accented with flirty lashes. Brows look darker in this photo, since I tweaked it late in the day.

I used a combination of my makeup loves with the stylists. For the face, he prepped the skin with Hourglass Mineral Veil primer and applied the combined shades 123, 301, 112 of the Koh Gen Do HD Moisture Foundation. For concealer, he used Okuma Concealer in shade 01. He bronzed it with Smashbox Suntan Matte and used NARS Manly blush. He set my face with Koh Gen Do translucent powder and Smashbox’s finishing powder. Brows were nicely peaked with Maybelline brow pencil in a light ash brown shade. My eyes were accented by the Tartlette Palette in the 3 shades second row top to bottom from the left. The outer V and Crease were accented by a darker brown color on the 3rd top from the left. Lashes were elongated using Red Cherry 747S and lined with Loreal’s black gel liner above and below the lashline to give the defined and smoky look. For the lips, MAC’s Whirl lined my lips and gave me a Chestnut looking color that gave me a pouty smile.

This was my BTS look in the photographers studio during the shoot. I took advantage of the FalconEyes Ring light which my other colleagues went gaga over. I took a selfie and this was the result. Look no shadows!

I loved the way it turned out, so far, this is one of my favorite looks.  My eyebrows could be a tad darker but I appreciate the fact that he still made it look “on fleek” without making it too harsh looking.  I received compliments  with this one and the makeup felt comfortable, not heavy looking.  Due to the ring light, I was able to see the makeup application up close and I noticed, my brows were lighter than I thought it to be.  Late in the day, I decided to fill them in so it can blend wit the rest of my face.  Professional lighting is the true test on how your makeup is photo worthy.

I didn’t mind the darker lip color too since I wanted to experiment a bit.  My lashes were a bit flirty and it gave me a semi Marilyn Monroe look since the ends were a bit heavy but also still felt very comfortable.  This look stayed on the whole day and I blotted my face with blotting paper and refreshed my lip color, I wouldn’t mind going out on a night out looking like this.

Do you like this look on me?

How they see Acie: Natural Makeup Look 2

How are you guys enjoying this series? Please email me or leave me a message on our Facebook page and let me know — I read every single comment and message. The first installment is here: How They See Acie

Davids Salon in the south of Manila was my second pick for my “natural ” look makeover and I chose their senior artist Rene Tengco to give me their signature look.

I wasnt able to take a before photo in this second experiment, it was  a few weeks after and my hair has obviously grown longer in the next shot.

After, my falsies on the left eye (your right side ) was threatening to fall out. Thank goodness it didn't.

I used my personal foundation, Makeup Forever HD Foundation in shades 123 and 127. For my eyes, a neutral palette from BYS was used together with a bronze shade from Cinema Secrets. A dark powder from Fanny Serrano was used as blush and bronzer.

He combined these two colors to give me a neutral lip tint.

Overall, the look was still neutral, Rene followed my request for a semi smoky look but I still managed to look natural.  I went to a beauty cosmetic launch that afternoon and the makeup still held up after a few hours.  However for the hair, I was not too impressed with how it turned out, as it gave me the “mommy spray net hair”. Haha! I guess since it was in the growing out phase, they did what they could do to achieve a style that was no fuss and away from my face. The lashes could have been glued better though; they bothered me during the day but surprisingly, they didn’t fall off (so that’s a plus, in my opinion).  Overall, it turned out OK and my verdict is, the look that I was going for was an enhanced version of myself.  Looking like your own mother is a very good idea after all.

I look like my mom.  Her eyebrows were on fleek back in the day.

Give me your comments.  How does this compare to Look no. 1?
