Please tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, passions?

      • I recently relocated to Baltimore, MD, to support my now-husband during his Medical Residency Training. Currently, I am Client Experience Analyst at a global investment management firm. In this role, I collaborate with developers and engineers to craft digital experiences tailored to the needs of financial intermediaries and advisors interested in our firm’s products. Before my move, I was immersed in the media industry in Manila.
      • Outside of work, my interests include exploring the world and experiencing different cultures. Since my moving, I’ve taken an interest in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, dedicating time to learning how to cook healthy meals. Staying active is also a priority for me, so I try to run regularly. Additionally, I find relaxation in binge-watching TV shows, making it a delightful balance to my active routine.

What inspired the choice of your bridal makeup look, and how does it complement your overall wedding style?

  • This choice of a natural and understated makeup look seamlessly aligned with my overall wedding style. The wedding dress I selected mirrored my taste, and when friends and family saw it, they unanimously remarked that it was undeniably a “Kyla” dress. Fortunately, everything came together beautifully. For me, “less is more” so I followed this rule too when I was talking to you on my bridal makeup look. Given that I typically opt for minimal makeup regularly, I aimed to maintain that simplicity on my wedding day. The goal was to appear refined and polished while still feeling like myself – an enhanced version of the familiar face my family and friends know.

How did you like the outcome of our time together, for your special day?

  • I’m very happy with the outcome of our time together. In fact, even when I called you via Whatsapp to finalize everything, I was already so proud and confident with my choice to get you as my make-up artist. It also helped that I participated in the make-up class you conducted for me and my cousins. I felt like a lot of the things you taught during that session made sense to me and that made it easier to trust you for my wedding.   Also, I was quite nervous the night before until the day itself. I don’t think I was even able to sleep but when our preparations started, it helped me calm down. I enjoyed the conversations we had while I was getting ready so I enjoyed our time together.

What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love? Could you share that photo with us?

It was a special moment for me because looking back, they all did it out of Love and I feel extremely lucky and grateful to be on the receiving end of all their Love.

      • One special memory I have wasn’t really during the wedding but more days and weeks prior. We didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for the wedding because Joel only found out he could go on break about 6 months before. On top of that, I wasn’t in Manila so really the one doing all the work was my mom and dad. They did the food tasting, the menu planning, and arranging for everything else. Lahat na talaga they helped me fix and finalize. On top of that, since my reception was going to be in my Lola’s house, all my titas and both grandparents went through all the stress to make sure everything was ready for my big day. It was a lot, but it was a special moment for me because looking back, they all did it out of Love and I feel extremely lucky and grateful to be on the receiving end of all their Love.

What was a good beauty moment for you during the wedding day itself?

  • I think a good beauty moment was after you finished my hair and make-up, I put on the dress and took some pictures in the main house of Casa Luminaria. It was nice to see everything come together in that moment.

Favourite beauty product, application used during your wedding and why?

Eye patches used on Kyla. You can wear it 3 ways depending on your beauty concern.

Used to drain any excess fluid and de puff the face.

Soothing, helps in the circulation around the eye area.

  • I’m not exactly sure what the product was called, but while preparing, you had me apply a mask-like sheet under my eyes. Also when you used the face roller and started the skin prep. Considering my lack of sleep and recent stress, I believe the skin prep and products you used during this step played a role in reducing the visible signs of stress on my face.

Any bridal tips you want to share for future brides planning their wedding?

  • Don’t forget why you’re having a wedding day. Amid all the planning, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that it’s just one day and everything has to be perfect, but the truth is the real deal is how the marriage will go. Things tend to work out, and if they don’t, just laugh it off. Everything will be okay.

What is one thing you could change during your wedding preparation?

  • I don’t think I would change anything about the wedding itself-it was perfect. Maybe I should have just started planning earlier but it’s too late to dwell on that now.

Any beauty rituals you did or received that you want to share?

  • Sleep – or at the very least, try to.

Favourite photo of you during the wedding and why.

A relaxed Bride surrounded by her friends and sister.
  • I haven’t received all the photos yet but I think this was a good one. I like it because this photo was taken while I was with my sister and best friends. We were struggling to walk on the grass and avoiding an army of red ants but you won’t notice it in this picture. On top of that, I feel like I look natural and calm in this photo. It doesn’t show how nervous I was.

I’ve been lucky to have worked with chill Brides lately and if Kyla’s wedding is a good sign of what the rest of 2024 has to offer me, I’m all for it.  Pleasure is always mine, thank you.

Resilience in White: Behind the Veil Series, Beatriz Gonzales Marañon

Bride Bea Gonzales has recently penned a blog on her personal social media account narrating her struggles with mental health, her surgeries during childhood and her recent struggles coping with the pandemic.  Emotionally not easy.

I did her makeup and hair earlier this year sort of her Bridal trial if you will.  Her mom is a client of mine and we met during the 25th wedding anniversary celebration, which Bea organized for her parents.  She struck me as a sweet, polite and smart young woman and she still is, but beneath the smiles there is always a story.

I never knew about her struggles since she was 14 years old, the many surgeries and her diagnosed bi polar disorder.  She overcame them through the best support system she ever had, her parents, family and friends to get through her trials.  Her Mom Jo was instrumental in her healing like most mothers do, Moms help their children no matter the circumstances.

Here is our chat together:

1. Please tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, passions?

I’m Bea Gonzales-Marañon, an artist, writer, storyteller, and mental health advocate… who works in tech. It’s not your usual combination, but it’s been a fun experience shaking up the software industry with all sorts of out-of-the-box ideas.

2. What inspired the choice of your bridal makeup look, and how does it complement your overall wedding style?

I’ve been a client of Acie for years and at this point, I don’t even need to show her my pegs! For our wedding, my husband and I actually decided not to give most of our suppliers any pegs and gave them creative freedom. The result? Suppliers that really gave it their all.

3. How did you like the outcome of our time together, for your special day?

As usual, I had fun working with Acie! We had a morning wedding, so prep time started at roughly 2:30 AM. That didn’t stop us from playing 90s music and working on q quirky reel, though. Acie was super game to take part in my shenanigans.

4. What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love? Could you share that photo with us?

Exchanging our vows in private. It was such an intimate moment of pure love for each other.

5). What was a good beauty moment for you during the wedding day itself?

Having my photos taken in a forest-like area, as if I was in Taylor Swift’s Folklore era. The sun hit my face and gown just right to make the photos look ethereal… even if they were just taken in a vacant spot by the parking lot.

6)  Favourite beauty product, application used during your wedding and why?

THE PREP. Every cold thing Acie put on my face felt so good and was much-needed after only a few hours of sleep. It was a nice, thoughtful step that I’ve noticed really sets her apart from other makeup artists I’ve worked with.

7)  Any bridal tips you want to share for future brides planning their wedding?

TRUST YOUR SUPPLIERS. There will always be setbacks and imperfections, and that’s totally okay! Trust me, when you treat your suppliers as friends and give them your full trust, they will do their best. Aim to be a Bridechilla, not a Bridezilla!

Also, focus on your husband and yourself. When the couple feels the love, the guests feel the love.

8)  What is one thing you could change during your wedding preparation?

Have the wedding a tiny bit later in the morning. More sleep is always a plus!

9)  Any beauty rituals you did or received that you want to share?

I went to my dermatologist (Aivee Clinic) 1 month, 2 weeks, and 1 week before the wedding. I had them analyze my skin and prepare a regimen that would keep my skin glowing ’til the event.

10)  Favourite photo of you during the wedding and why.

Probably our couple photo in the Taylor Swift Folklore forest. It looked really magical and professional! Another would be our photo right after our private vows. We were both still teary-eyed, taking in each other’s words.

11) Can you share any beauty rituals or skincare routines you followed in the weeks leading up to your wedding for that extra bridal glow?

I kept my skincare routine simple: Double cleanse, moisturize like there’s no tomorrow, add some anti-acne cream just in case, and drink lots of water.

12) What role did your makeup artist play in helping you feel confident and beautiful on your wedding day?

She enhanced my features, rather than make me look like a totally different person. She also made sure everything was water-proof and would remain intact until the end of the event. I didn’t even have to try to hold back my tears! I could let myself feel all the feels and take in every magical moment of the day.

Bea’s journey was the courage to embrace vulnerability. She shattered the stigma surrounding mental health by openly sharing her struggles, breaking the silence that often surrounds these issues. She also inspired others to seek help without shame or fear.

“ Why aim for perfection, when you can instead aim to serve as an inspiration?”  Well said Brava Bea!

A Different kind of Coronation

Mother’s Day is an American holiday  started by  Anna Jarvis who wanted to honor her activist Mom Ann Reeves Jarvis whose advocacy was to improve the health conditions of the impoverished women in the Appalachian region in the 1800’s.

This holiday is usually celebrated on the second Sunday of May to honor all mothers for their unwavering love and sacrifice in nurturing and raising their children.

While the day was observed as a legal holiday, celebrated with simplicity and reverence—church services were held in honor of all mothers, living and dead. Fast Forward to today, Mother’s Day has become mainstream by commercializing it’s significance with greeting cards, the sending of flowers and buying gifts to honor Mothers.

Regardless of how we celebrate this day,  there is no right or wrong way on how we choose to honor and express our love to the woman that we all call Mom, a simple gesture or a heartfelt message thanking and valuing our Moms is never a bad idea.  Here is mine.

A lawyer by profession, Kat Valdez Cruz is also a college administrator of Patts College of Aeronatics.  I share with you a snippet of Kat’s parenting style, a single widowed mother raising two beautiful and accomplished daughters Annika and Alessi.

Describe your parenting style.  Does it differ from one child to another?

“I think I’ve incorporated a little bit of how my parents raised me but mostly just figuring things out along the way. I’m quite stern and rigid. I had to be since I was left to raise the girls alone. But as I aged, I think I have mellowed from being very strict to being more flexible and accepting that things don’t always turn out how you want them to. The girls raised me as well. 😊”

What advice can or did you give to your daughters that you feel they took it to heart?

“I’ve raised my daughters to be strong and independent. I’ve always told them that life will not always be a bed of roses. It will be a series of trials and challenges. You must learn to persevere and remain steadfast. When it comes to finding a partner in life, I told them to use both smarts and prayer. It is my most fervent wish – that they find someone that will perfectly complement them and be a great partner in life.”

What have you learned as a parent in raising your girls?

“When the kids were younger and I had just lost Reymond, I sought the help of a therapist. She very clearly told me – your children will have a million friends. Don’t try to be a friend to them. They don’t need that. What they need is a parent who will keep them in place. A parent who will set the rules and who will make sure they follow them. Don’t try to be a friend and think you will get along 100% of the time. Be a parent because that’s what they need most from you. I take this to heart always.”

Have your children taught you something that you appreciate or appreciated?

“My children are my constant reminder that whatever I go through in life, it will always be good because I have them by my side. They are the ones who will stand by me even if I make mistakes and wrong decisions. They teach me everyday how to love with no limits and to be a better person in the process.”

What is your beauty routine?  Any favorite products?

“When I hit 40 a few years back, I realized that beauty routines are a must! We cannot rely on youth and natural beauty anymore,   now that I am 50! I apply sunscreen before I step out the door to exercise and re-apply before I go to the office. Moisturizers are a must as age dries out my skin. I also use eye creams and serums.  Seems like a lot but again, I think it’s necessary if we want our skin to remain supple and young. Its okay to age! I am not afraid of that. I however want to age gracefully – like my Mother. 😊”

Are there beauty products you share or your girls have shared with you that you loved?

Indoor florescent lighting or blue light from the computer can contribute to melasma and skin darkening too. Aging skin can be delayed by the regular use of Sunscreen on the face.

“We are beauty junkies! I love buying makeup and accessories but I don’t really know how to use them. My children are such great teachers! They’ve taught me the importance of applying contour, bronzer, highlights and more! At the moment, my most favorite beauty product is my sunblock stick. I love how it applies so seamlessly without having to touch the product and the application is not sticky at all.”

What is your favorite photo/s from the shoot and why?

“I love all! You and Andrea made us shine! Thank you for this experience with my girls.”

10). Describe a beauty moment for you that changed the way you approach beauty or made your feel confident.

A sunscreen stick is always handy, don’t forget to reapply sunscreen during midday to protect your face from harmful UV rays.

“Ten years of doing a triathlon under the sun and extreme heat really aged my skin. I enjoyed the sport and did not realize how much it was affecting my skin. When I walked away from it, my skin changed as well. I was not as tanned which for me was a beauty mark. It’s what I believed was beautiful then. Now a few shades lighter but a few sizes bigger, (hehe) I am comfortable where my body is at. I find beauty in how I am today – older, fairer, chunkier but still keeping fit and happier.”

To all the Mothers who never cease to nurture, care, guide and love their children, a big thank you for all that you do and all that you are!  You are our Queens!

Top 5 Favorite Foundations for Bridal

Who doesn’t want to look good in photos or in real life?  Finding your perfect foundation is one of the most intimidating tasks when shopping for makeup.  Throw in a special event like a wedding and it can be even more challenging.  You need it to be long lasting and make it look like second skin.

The following choices have been narrowed down to five but there are other high performing foundations in the market to choose from but these have proven the criteria I set for when making my clients and Brides look picture perfect.

Best Overall:  Lisa Eldridge Seamless Foundation

Formulated in Kyoto Japan, The medium coverage is customizable that can be layered up or down depending on the coverage you want.  Infused with Uji Green Tea Extract, to help the skin fight radicals, Bamboo extract, to help absorb oil to give the skin a skin like finish an active ingredient from a Nasturtium flower to help boost hydration and smooth the skin.  The new ingredient Filmexel that forms like a flexible mesh on the skin to give a lifting a tightening effect. Who doesn’t want that?  It’a also suited for vegans, its alcohol, paraben and talc free, perfect for sensitive skin.  It has a pump that is calibrated to give you the exact amount of coverage you need.  Its best applied in thin layers.

Available at www.lisaeldridge.com

Best Long wearing:  NARS Radiant Long Wearing Foundation

True to its marketing spiel, it says it can last up to 16 hours, but I don’t know who has makeup that long on the face.  But yes it has lasted more than 8 hours on a Bride and its coverage is medium to full.  It has multiple shades that fit any skin tone, its transfer and sweat proof and suitable for vegans as well.  Its breathable and lightweight.  Radiant?  yes it is, it even looks better when it stays on the face a bit longer.  Infused with watermelon, and citrus extracts, it helps brighten the skin too.

NARS Available at Rustans

BEST for Glow from Within Look:  Jung Saem Mool Nuder Foundation

Jung Saem Mool a Korean Celebrity artist for 30 years is known for that “transparent beauty” where minimal makeup is used to enhance not mask the one’s features.  Its kinda my beauty mantra too, “still you but better”.
Its medium coverage and adjusts to your skin tone.  Its best applied with the cushion puff it comes with, patting the product and not rubbing it in.  It gives a subtle glow to the skin, but unfortunately the shade range is limited and suited for the Korean fair skin tone.  My shade is Medium deep but it’s still in the light skin tone range.

Available at https://www.jsmbeauty.us/

Best for Oily Skin:  Makeup Forever Matte Velvet Finish

I apply this foundation by prepping the skin with serums, oil and a lightweight moisturizer.  What this does is it gives the skin a satin like finish to the skin and its also long lasting.  I use this a lot for Brides with oily to combination skin as the finish it gives is just the right amount of sheen.  Available in many skin shades and I like the tube dispenser method as it kept sanitary when its’ being dispensed.

It says 24 hours coverage with its Flexifit fit technology that lasts all day and it doesn’t crease or fade.  Just like what the name says its Makeup Forever.

Available at Lazada, Sephora and https://www.makeupforever.com/us/en?l=en&c=US

Best for Airbrush quality look:  Makeup Forever Ultra HD

Foundation and Primer in one palette!  It s so sheer but when applied its undetectable and it just gives your skin a smoother even finish. The 12 shade formula can be used to highlight, contour and conceal to give you the perfect skin base.  The silicone based formula is lightweight and can be adjusted to tone it up or tone down depending on your preference.  You can buy individual shades and it can be purchased as a stick, perfect on the go.

Available at https://www.makeupforever.com/us/en?l=en&c=US, Lazada and Sephora

TIP:  When trying out foundation swatches, let it rest on the skin for 10-15 minutes to see if it changes color (oxidize).  If it does, try another product that stays true to your skin tone.

When Does makeup expire? Cheat Sheet

Its a New Year everyone!  January is usually a time to start anything new, a fitness routine, throwing out old things you dont need, whether its clothes, home decor or maybe its time to restore that table that needs a new coat of varnish or paint.

Same with makeup products, raise your hand if you have a lipstick, a beauty blender sponge or a pot of concealer that you’ve been swiping since the last 2 years because you really love the shade and replacing them is either difficult to purchase or its out of stock.  I’m also quite guilty since i am a creature of habit and since its convenient and handy, its easy to disregard its expiration date.  Sponges and products can develop bacteria over time since damp environments can make these harmful when kept long.  Think of dipping your fingers into it and putting it in your face, eyes and lips , you get the idea.

Here’s a cheat primer when to toss your beauty items.

When Do Products Expire?

3-6 MONTHS
Mascara, Liquid Eyeliner, Gel Eyeliner
Replace these products often

12-18 MONTHS
Liquids (foundations, liquid blush, liquid highlighters, lip gloss, etc) Creams (foundations, cream blush, lipstick, lip gloss, cream eyeshadow, etc)
Powder Eyeshadows (Mucus Membrane)

24 MONTHS
Face Powder Products (powder blush, powder bronzer, powder highlighter, etc) Wooden Pencils (Be sure that you sharpen and spray the sharpener with 70% alcohol each use)”

36 MONTHS +
Brushes & Tools
Clean Lash Curlers & Tweezers and with 70% alcohol each use Clean brushes 1-2x a week (more often if they face skin challenges)
Unopened Products (Most products have a 3 year shelf life, unopened. Once exposed to air, the clock starts)”

WRITE “BUY ON DATE & OPEN DATE” WITH SHARPIE
With a metallic Sharpie, write the date they purchase the product on the outer package.
Write the day they open the product on the container once they open the product.

I hope with this simple cheat sheet, you can give your makeup bags and cabinets a fresh start.

Behind the Veil – Singson Camara Nuptials

Most of the time, simple is best.  It keeps things fluid, effortless and comfortable.  Michaela is all that.  Just in her short story below, we met through her now husband, who is my chiropractor at Intercare.  I wasn’t expecting anything from that meeting since I figured Michaela already had finalized her makeup artist options since the wedding was a few months away.

Both families come from a line of professionals and achievers, I admire the values that her mother Tang and father inculcated in their children.   Seeking higher education is always  worth pursuing more than the material values that are fleeting and superficial.  I also saw how the family came together and pulled out all the stops, to help, soothe and calm a nervous bride specially as the magic hour is nearing .

This is what class is all about.  I love how you were so cool and calm throughout your preparations and your inner glow definitely showed through, just like how a blushing Bride should be. Thank you for making me a part of your love journey,  I wish you and Miguel a happy and prosperous marriage filled with blessings, joy and happiness.

1. Please tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, passions?
Hi! I’m Mika. I’m an architect who specializes in sustainability. I work with the Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Carbon Lab team that does a mix of ensuring energy efficiency, low carbon and LEED/WELL consulting.

During my free time, I love to  paint, eat BBQ popcorn + watch movies, hike, play board games, and skate. I started skating with my sister earlier this year, and we both love it so much that we go at least once a week.

2. How did you find out about me (Acie Fores Makeup Artist)? What made you want to work with me?
I first heard about you from my (now) husband Miguel. He randomly gave me a calling card saying his patient was a make-up artist and I should try her out. Admittedly, I didn’t call you RIGHT after that, because in my head – “he does not know the difference between foundation and primer” But a few days later, my tita had mentioned you too, saying that her friends had worked with you previously, and that you had made all her friends look amazing!

3. How did you like the outcome of our time together, for your special day?
Today’s forecast, bridal showers
I liked you trial pa lang! Haha! By that time, I had tried na three make-up artists and was already getting frustrated that I had not found “the one” for my big day. I sound so arte, but my skin is actually so sensitive. (Full make-up really feels like a chore because of how heavy it feels on my face.) I had broken out in rashes after the trial with make-up artist #3, and ended up with a bad stye with make-up artist #1. I was close to picking make-up artist #2 just cause I did not break out into rashes after the trial. Buti nalang, Miguel and my tita mentioned you. So, I said, “Sige na nga one more trial.”
The minute you started prepping my skin I knew na you were different. I mean, how many people have tried a make-up artist who will exfoliate their skin and then massage it before the make-up?
As the trial went on, you airbrushed my make up on. (My first time to try airbrushed make-up) Not only did it feel great – feeling like I didn’t have any make-up on my face, but I loved how you made me look too! I felt the make-up looked so natural – like I was still me, but a flawless, glowing version of me! Totally what I was going for, for my big day!
So of course, on the day itself I sat on the make up chair with no worries at all. The full trust I had in you made all the difference.
4. What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love? Could you share that photo with us?
It’s not the wedding itself, but the day before. Getting ready with my family was such an intimate time for me. This includes both my immediate family and my extended family. My extended family – siblings of my parents and their children, were with us prior to the wedding too. They all came to Tagaytay the day before and we spent the night hanging out. I felt as if they were all hand-holding me all the way to the wedding.
5). What was a good beauty moment for you during the wedding day itself?
Can I say none? Haha! It’s not that I didn’t feel beautiful on the day, but I didn’t have what I would call a beauty moment. The day was beautiful over-all, because of the way everything fell into place.
6)  Favourite beauty product, application used during your wedding and why?
If you cant get to a dermatologist, this is the next best things to flake off dead skin cells and give you a smooth canvas, ready for makeup.
I really loved the Cure Aqua gel exfoliator that you used on me. I felt like it got (cause i use it regularly now) all the gunk/dead skin cells out. I also liked the eye massage. Felt great to get a facial massage on the day itself!
7)  Any bridal tips you want to share for future brides planning their wedding?
Find the best suppliers for the big day – suppliers you are happy with, then on the day just watch them all work their magic and watch everything fall into place.
8)  What is one thing you could change during your wedding preparation?
I don’t know if I would change anything to be honest. Wedding planning was definitely stressful, but the day itself – the ceremony and dinner went perfectly. Everything that happened prior ended in something beautiful.
9)  Any beauty rituals you did or received that you want to share?
None really, aside from the Cure Aqua gel exfoliator that I mentioned in # 6.
10)  Favourite photo of you during the wedding and why.

The wedding ceremony was quick, and felt surreal. I didn’t realize I was smiling and laughing a lot too throughout the ceremony. So when I saw the photos, it was such a pleasant surprise to see so many photos where Miguel and I were just laughing. It’s such a great reminder of the day that unfolded, and how much fun we had (and have) together.

“Got everything I need right here”. Bride Cara

I was humbled and touched that choosing me as her makeup artist was due to the fact that my newfound career 12 years ago influenced her love for anything makeup .  This was confirmed by her mother and by Cara when I was tasked to do her wedding.  I was still not sure because Cara is an influencer and has a strong following.  She definitely can challenge my makeup skills on her IG page so I countered.  My style leans toward a more romantic look and I wasnt quite sure this is the look she wanted.  Obviously, I was kilig when she insisted I do her face.  Thank you Cara!

Every wedding is different, and how Cara and Jon met was not in a traditional sense wherein they were introduced by friends or they met at an event or social gathering.  Nowadays, social media has now become the new dating dynamic that replaces the old methods of meeting new people .  Bumble is the new best friend that connects people virtually.

I’ve known Cara to be a doer and a go getter, she started a clothing line  Crow, now temporarily on hold due to new priorities at work, she has been very outspoken with current issues.  She also has a generous spirit and a big heart, she helped raise funds and took care of her long time nanny who sadly passed away from cancer while running her business.

Jon, you married the right woman!  Fearless, strong and built with a heart of gold.  Bumble was the right matchmaker!

Here are excerpts of my Behind the Veil conversation series with Cara.

1). Please tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, passions?

I work as a brand manager for a wellness company but I started my career in the local beauty industry serving as the marketing lead for several cult favorite and home grown brands. I love anything to do with beauty.

2). How did you and Jon meet?

Bumble!

3. How did you like the outcome of our time together, for your special day?

I loved it as you were already someone I’ve known pretty much all my life so it was very comfortable and pleasant.

4. What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love? Could you share that photo with us?

When I first saw the entire look come together — I don’t wear dresses at all and while I love fashion and beauty, I don’t consider myself a girly girl. It felt nice and different to be dressed up in a wedding dress!

5). What was a good beauty moment for you during the wedding day itself?

I normally have dry and flaky skin so the fact that my skin looked glowy and well moisturized was a great beauty moment.

6) Favourite beauty product, application used during your wedding and why?

I loved airbrush makeup since it was my first time. It was soothing and different from my traditional makeup experiences.

7) Any bridal tips you want to share for future brides planning their wedding?

I think skin prep is really important especially for brides like myself with really dry skin. It truly makes a difference!

8) What is one thing you could change during your wedding preparation?

Nothing, everything went as planned!

9) Any beauty rituals you did or received that you want to share?

I got a facial, had my hair toned and got eyelash extensions prior to the ceremony. I also got nail extensions.

10) Favourite photo of you during the wedding and why.

Because it was the first time I tried the entire look with hair and makeup!

Best wishes to you Cara and Jon!!!

How to get the Lit-From-Within glow.

Now that Covid restrictions have eased up on most parts of the world, Currently I see events and weddings resuming although cautiously,  I couldn’t ‘ve been happier and excited.  We’ve had 2 1/2 years of lockdown to learn how the disease works, we have seen the beneficial effects of being vaccinated and the more we know the more we get better at learning how to cope with the pandemic.

So the past few months, have seen me working at weddings beginning at the start of this year with all the Covid protocols in place and frankly I’m enjoying the intimate celebrations.  Things move faster, it becomes more special and memorable.

So I’ve put together a few things that inspire rebirth, positivity and radiance since my beauty philosophy is to always enhance what’s already there, here they are:

Skin:

Cure Natural Aqua Gel

I always start off with a fresh canvas and I normally ask Brides to exfoliate their skin prior to the makeup.  This ensures that there are no dry flaky skin that can hinder the absorption of products that can give the skin a boost in preparation for the makeup.  Most of them usually get surprised how much dead skin comes off with this application.  Its called gommage exfoliation.

Glossier Super Glow Vitamin C with Magnesium Serum

https://images.ctfassets.net/p3w8f4svwgcg/6jYsk2gkdy7SdeQacRi5cD/91c5caac963a174980341a3573df6120/SuperGlow_0_Global_01.jpg?w=1400&q=80&fm=webp

We all know that Vitamin C when applied to the skin brightens the face.  This is a Vitamin C derivative (Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate aka MAP) which helps even out skin tone and improve the appearance of dark spots (and because it’s stable, it won’t oxidize or degrade after you open the bottle), while Magnesium PCA enhances hydration and replenishes moisture, so skin looks recharged, fresh, and glowy.  It has all the good stuff, Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter, and Sunflower Seed Oil and Evodia Rutaecarpa Fruit Extract to condition and nourish the skin.  Its lightweight, and the fragrance-free emulsion soaks in immediately with no filmy residue.  (source:  Glossier.com)

Sonia Roselli Water Elixir, Water Oil

Formulated with Ceramides, the water elixir plumps out the skin and gives it a hydration boost.  It helps restore the skin barrier and calms redness.  Added to this is the water oil applied to the cheeks and neck to hydrate dry skin.  Both products are lightweight not oily, greasy at all.  I know, you’re probably thinking oil on top of a serum may be a little too much for our humid weather.  Trust me this doesn’t make you feel oily.  The Water oil contains Squalane oil, Camellia Seed Oil, Avocado oil, Sea Buckthorn oil, Argan and Rice bran oil to name a few.  Some of these have antibacterial properties to heal and make the skin supple.  Apply 1 pump and massage into the face and neck.  Most skin types I work with are actually dehydrated from either over scrubbing  or not drinking enough water.

Moisturizer

https://www.clinique.com/product/1574/58208/3-step/step-3-moisturize/dramatically-differenttm-hydrating-jelly

Applying a moisturizer on top of the water oil seals the skin to make it plump, hydrated and primed.  Make sure that the moisturizer you apply is the right one for your skin type.

Face Roller

https://duty-free-japan.jp/narita/en/goodsDetail.aspx?sCD=5527450055

I use a face roller to massage away any tension, puffiness and to warm up circulation on the face.  Most Brides are holding so much tension and stress from their planning that the jaw and neck are usually hot spots that need relaxation and de stressing.

Ice Roller

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/31nOsEOkQAL.jpg

To add to the chill factor, this is the last step in my skin prep to further soothe irritation, redness and puffiness.  Stored in the freezer, these rollers constrict the blood vessels on the face.  I recently added this to my personal skincare regimen specially after I had laser done on my melasma last year.  This really soothed my face after that hot and warm sensation from the laser treatment and brought the redness and swelling down immediately.

Makeup

Jung Saem Mool Foundation

https://m.beautykoreamall.com/FileData/product/1588831344/20200507_E4709EA7EA0E32E6.jpg

I chose this foundation mainly because of the coverage it provides.  Its dewy when applied but doesn’t look oily.  Its light,  the texture is serum based but slightly thicker not as watery.  Typically Korean made, you can be assured that you are going to get dewy, its ingredient list is comparable to the other Western brands and the shades are suited for the Asian skin tone.  You can apply this 2 – 3x for medium to full coverage.  One pump is really enough to cover the face but for longevity and fuller coverage I used 2 pumps and I had a little more to spare.  Wait a few minutes for the first layer to sink in before applying the next layer.  I used a blending brush to apply then tapped a beauty blender sponge to even out the coverage and to make it look more seamless.  The shade I used was Medium.  I also love the packaging.  Nude just like the coverage.  Its your skin but better.

Charlotte Tillbury Flawless Filter

Its Airbrush in a bottle.  I apply this on the high points of the face, top of cheekbones, cupid’s bow, bridge of the nose to highlight the face.  I sometimes add this to the foundation to give the face an added shimmer.  Ingredients include a polymer, porcelain flower extract, glossy oil to give the face a blurring effect.  Its a skin filter so to speak.

Dior Universal Glow Face Palette

Another secret weapon is this palette.  It can be used on the face and the eyes.  I use the Rosy and yellow gold shades for the cheeks and eyelids, the copper shade can also be used in the hollows of the cheeks and the eye crease as well.  Its subtle highlight gives the skin that natural sheen and luminosity without the lit from NASA space effect.  If you have overpowdered your face, apply this with a soft brush to remove the chalky and look.

Charlotte Tillbury Pillow Talk Cheek to Chic

Swish and Pop as the product description says, its a nude pink shade that flatters everyone.  I swirl my blush brush on the two shades and apply on the cheeks for an instant glow.

Most of these products are available at Sephora, Shopee, Lazada and SoniaRoselli.com  Share with me your other favorite products that give you that lit from within glow.    Take care and keep hydrated!

Behind the Veil : Bianca and Joe Salud

Intimate Wedding

“My Dad is here with me”

Bianca lost her father about six years ago to cancer and when  I was prepping her for hair and makeup, that s when Bianca said those 6 words.  Dad was in the form of a yellow and black butterfly hovering among the plants in the garden.

She and I almost teared up.  True enough, the yellow butterfly was hovering until I finished her getting prepped.
I said, “Bianca your dad approves of Joe.”  Right away Bianca nodded and said her dad appeared in her dream and is really happy it’s Joe for her.
Bianca and Joe met at a Coachella concert but they went on separate groups but they shared similar friends.  Based on the best man s speech that night, it was Joe that fell head over heels the moment he met her.
I ve spent a little time with the couple before their December wedding over a beach weekend and you know when they re the right fit.  From what I gathered is that they seem to have a good head on their shoulders, Bianca just finished her MA in Education and Joe has his sights on the family business.
They described their wedding plans and I must say it is so appropriate and fitting to the present times.  S I M P L E not complicated is how they want their special day to be.  They dispensed with the unnecessary frivolities when it comes to the wedding preparations.  The only difficult task was trimming the guest list since both come from big families.
Bianca the ever practical lady, said she didn’t want a big fuss and didn’t need the special treatment since she preferred to spend it on their new home and Joe has plans of taking his Masters abroad.
There are so many positive things going on for this couple and they seem to be the perfect couple.

Your Dad was right Bianca, Joe is the perfect man for you.  You chose well.

I’ve been meaning to look into the Chanel Tan De Soleil and now that I know the color works for me I will definitely make that purchase when I am able to find it.

Something old is new again! Full face makeup using highlighters and contouring products

I’ve always believed in maximizing the use of your products whether its beauty products or items you have in the kitchen or cupboard.  Now that we’re in the middle of another lockdown, we are staying indoors and getting to know every nook and cranny of our homes and doing a Marie Kondo in our garages, pantries and bedrooms.

For this tutorial, I’ve discovered a lot of makeup eye palettes, highlighting, contouring and bronzing products hiding in my drawers, some of them barely used or still brand new.  I honestly don’t need new makeup.  I decided to show you how you can mix them in your daily makeup routine while creating a beautiful classy look.

Tips and Tricks

  1.  For the face, mix a teaspoon size of your favorite luminizer or highlighter, in this case, I used MAC Strobe Cream with a cream foundation like Naturactor in the shade Ochre or 152.  This method also thins out a heavier consistency of foundation.  Do not mix a luminizer with a very dewy foundation as this can look too greasy on the face.  If you mix a highlighter with a matte or Demi matte foundation the result will be satin like and not over the top.
Cream or liquid Foundations are best suited to mix your luminizer with. Choose a matte or Demi matte foundation to give you a satin glowing finish.
https://www.maccosmetics.com/esearch?form_id=perlgem_search_form&search=Strobe+cream&_TOKEN=c333194c6ab86937f123d42a053fce789866842e%2Cbebb4a96f37263f335f775962060e878264d7d4f%2C1628839243
This has a pinky silver color that’s great with mixing with your favorite foundation. Not too warm or white, this is the perfect universal color.

2). I love layering cream and liquid products with their powder versions.  This method makes your makeup last longer.  I use the contour shade as a base for my eyelid crease and nose line.  The lighter shade can also be used as a base for the eye shadow on the lid.

This is the best dupe for Tom Ford’s Contour cream palette! Addiction in shade Gold Reflection 02,  is a universal contour shade for light to medium skin tones.

This is another affordable alternative, made by Rimmel, its so portable, and easy to apply! Insta Duo Contour Stick in Dark

I know you’ve seen me use this product in most of my videos. Chanel Soleil De tan is my HG of bronzers. Not too orange, it gives the right amount of warmth to the face. Use all over the eyelid or as a transition shade on the crease to give the eyes depth.

https://www.maccosmetics.com/product/13849/30735/products/makeup/face/powder/mineralize-skinfinish
MAC Soft and Gentle is exactly what it says. Its not shimmery or frosty. Its skin like. Apply on the highpoints of the face, cheekbone, brow bone and Cupid’s bow

https://www.makeupforever.com/hk/en/face/blush/artist-face-color-refill-MI000021102.html
Makeup Forever Highlighter H106, Irridescent Champagne is my choice for eyelid color. Swipe wet to give it a foil like texture.

3). Bought the wrong shade of powder?  Too dark?  Use them as bronzers or to contour your face.  I used this underneath my cheeks and to seal the cream products, on the nose line and eyelid crease and temples to give my face some depth.

Charlotte Tillbury Airbrush Powder in shade 4, don’t throw this away! This can be used as contour colors on the temples, nose line, eye crease and under the cheeks. Use a big powder brush and blending brush to avoid harsh lines.

4). Use lipsticks as cream blush!  If you think the shade of lipstick is either too light, too dark or just the wrong shade of coral, pink or red, use it as a base for blush and reinforce it with your powder blush.  Blend the two shades together for a seamless effect.

Makeup Forever Rouge artist 24, a coral shade that is flattering to light to medium skin tones. You can also use this as a base for eye shadow when you feel like doing a neutral to natural makeup looks. Be sure to check if your product is safe to use for the eyes.

Brow How

“Brows are 90% of your selfies”.

Browgal Productions

While eyes are the windows of the soul, eyebrows express emotions best.  They frame the eyes, shape the face and they have the ability to bring your best features into focus while downplaying the flaws.  A popular trend is Microblading  making to foolproof to achieve perfect looking brows.  Choosing the right tattoo artist for this procedure is key.  Since my brows are not that sparse and light, I can still manage to do them myself.

If you have groomed brows, there is less need to do a full face makeup and it makes you look polished, youthful looking and rested.  Don’t worry if you have less than perfect eyebrows, you can achieve an aesthetically pleasing set by having them groomed, trimmed and filled with these easy steps.

1). Grooming

If you have them professionally groomed, look for a reputable salon or artist to do it.  If you are on a budget, do this once and ask her/him if they can teach you to groom them yourselves after.

Brush your eyebrow hairs upward with an eyebrow spoolie to smooth out the hairs.  Tweeze any unwanted hair from the top and from the bottom to achieve a clean look.

Plucking the brows

2).  The 3 point guideline

3). Choosing eyebrow color and filling in

Choose your natural brow color and add a hint of your hair color for a uniform look.  If your hair is black, choose a color that’s dark brown, soft brown or taupe to avoid a harsh looking brow.  If your hair is blond with brown eyebrows, get a color that’s in between to create a balanced look.

If you’re using a brow powder, apply color with an angled or square tipped stiff brush.  Deposit color in the middle of the brow until the tail.  This is where you want the darkest color to be.  With the leftover color on the brush, move towards the front of the brow where color is the lightest part to give a gradient effect.  Fill in the blank spots.  Brush brows with a a spoolie.  Repeat the process until you get the desired effect.

If you’re using a pencil, create a template by starting from he bottom of the brow and draw a line underneath until the tail.  Draw a line on top of the brow until the tail as well.  Brush with your spoolie to remove harsh lines.  Fill in the brow with light strokes of the pencil to finish off the brow color.

4). Polishing the shape

Use a concealer or light colored pencil to go over mistakes or over coloring outside the brow area.  This also creates a clean sharp edge to the brow.  You may use a cotton tip dipped in concealer or makeup remover,  Blend with your finger, sponge or brush.

5). Setting your brows

To keep them from staying in place, apply a clear brow gel to further keep hairs in placebo brushing upwards.  For advanced makeup tips, use soap brow if you prefer doing this step.  Spritz your spoolie with water and dip it into a clear soap and make a paste.  Brush this on your brows.

These are basic simple steps you can try to get your brows in shape and gain confidence to look your simple best every day.

Feel Good, On the Go Makeup Video

Did you know that feeling good about yourself makes you more productive? Here’s an on-the-go, feel good  makeup look that could make each day feel a bit brighter 🥰

[My apologies for the background noise due to repairs in my home]

Everyone these days are glued to a gadget , sometimes multiple ones, to make us feel connected and entertained.  Meetings and work from Home are now conducted electronically through multiple platforms like Zoom, FB Messenger Video, Viber etc…  Digital presence has given rise to women and men (yes including men), to look their best in their meetings since you are with other members of your office team or clients and looks matter.

I’ve seen an increase in RingLight or other LED light panel usage online, including would you believe my favorite parish priest as well?   You see a round white halo in their irises to indicate that they are using good light to look good.

It may feel a bit trivial to put makeup on in these difficult times but it can help us put some semblance of routine by separating a workday from a weekend.  The idea of putting a game on face gives you a boost to start your day and make you feel better.  The ritual of putting yourself together and looking polished makes you feel centered and focused amidst these unsettling times.

So I hope I gave you a refresher and a quick makeup routine that you can incorporate in your daily life.
