Skincare for Women over 40 and above… and then some

Disclaimer:  The products featured here are not a paid promotion, these are products that I use and work for my skin type.  Please consult your Dermatologist or Skin Esthetician if you suspect you may be allergic to any of the ingredient components of the items featured here and to prescribe what will work for your skin type.

For the past 20 years, I’ve had oily to combination skin and as I’ve gotten older, my skin type had changed to Normal to Dry. My Dermatologist had said that this is due to changes in my body chemistry and hormones brought about by aging.  My normal areas like the cheek and sides of the forehead have gone dry and have patchy skin sometimes while my T-zone is not as oily in my 20’s.

Because of Aging, my face needs a little boosting, my jowls have slowly been more prominent, blame it on what doctors call a texting neck since we spend a lot of time hunched up looking down on our phones, my jawline needs definition and eyes have become a  little puffy due to poor diet choices and lack of sleep.

So here is what my skincare routine looks like and sometimes, depending on the weather, where my skin tends to be oily during the summer months and dry in the cooler months, I switch up skincare products to address current skin issues.

  1.  Cleanse the skin –  Use any cleansing soap that suits your skin type and make sure that it doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils.  Over cleaning your face sometimes can make you produce more oil due to the lack of moisture and hydration in the skin.  If your face feels tight after a wash, your soap may be a bit too drying.  Switch to a milder soap that’s good for sensitive skin.

2). Tone –  Look for a toner that has no alcohol that can further dry your skin.  The purpose of a toner is to bring back the ph levels of your skin, remove the last traces of dirt in your face and remove minerals and chlorine from the water.  It also closes the pores.

I like the Japanese variant, the Elixir Lifting Moisture Lotion II, (a Shiseido product), good for normal to dry skin.  Its watery texture doesn’t leave skin feeling tight, just refreshed.  It contains Collagen to lift skin and give it a dewy effect.  I’m so happy with the purchase, I added a refill so I won’t run out.

3). As an added boost, I apply a Hyaluronic Acid to retain moisture in the face and plump up the skin.  When skin is plumped up, fine lines are not visible.  When skin is hydrated, it helps in cell production because skin is not fighting hydration.  Why I like this brand?  Its lightweight and easily absorbed in the skin.  The name Mineral 89 is derived from the number of minerals found in the volcanic water used in this formulation.  This acts as a moisturizer as well.

Alternatively, I use a Vitamin C and E serum prescribed by my dermatologist to brighten and plump my skin.  Pictured above.  I squirt 3-4 drops and apply on my face.

4). Moisturize –  Because of our tropical, humid weather,  most women shy away from oils because it will make their skin oilier.  With better research and development over the years skincare products have improved in texture, its availability to penetrate skin and since this is plant based, the science behind it supports the claim.    This is one of my favorite moisturizers because it’s easily absorbed and doesn’t feel heavy on the skin.  Apply a 3-4 drops and warm it against the palm of. your hand and massage it in the face.

https://buy.cosmeticsnow.ph/iteminfo/clarins-face-treatment-oil-lotus-30ml
Easily absorbed and not oily at all

5). Massage –  I saw this roller being demoed in a store in Japan, and what it does is, the rollers simulate physical kneading by a face esthetician on your face and neck to make it firmer and help contour the face.  For aging women that’s the jowl and jawline area.  The solar panel in the middle of the handle acts as a microcurrent, you know you’re doing it right if you feel a slight tug when you roll it across your face.  You can use this for the arms as well.  You may purchase this at Sephora online.  If this doesn’t fit in your budget, you may look for dupes in shopping sites but look for one that has platinum coating not plastic to minimize irritation.

What is pictured above is a dupe and the solar panel is missing.  The thicker roller I alternate using, not pictured here, contains the solar panel.  I was experimenting on the different rollers.

https://duty-free-japan.jp/narita/en/goodsDetail.aspx?sCD=5527450055
Refa Carat Roller simulates kneading techniques to depuff and refine the contours of the face.

6). Lash and Brow Serum –

I’ve tried the expensive ones but nothing worked,  I made a simple recipe using the Essential oils from Young Living and researched on the recipe.  (I’m a member of Young Living Oils), It’s made from Castor oil, Lavender, Cedarwood, Rosemary and Vitamin E oils, ingredients that help lengthen and speed up the growth of lashes.  I apply this on my brows and lashes 2x/day.  See results in 6 weeks to 2 months if applied religiously.

If you’re applying brows and mascara during the day, skip this step and apply at night.  It does work and most of all doesn’t cost a lot.

7). Eye Serum –

I use this eye roller from Clinique as it contains caffeine to depuff and lighten the eyebags.  Again, aging hasn’t been kind to my eye area, the top eye are is slowly sagging creating a hooded effect.  To counteract this, by day I use the lighter eye serum and at night I use a slightly thicker eye product and apply on the top corner and contour of the eye avoiding the lid and in the undereye portion as well.  The rollerball gives a cooling effect.  Put this in the fridge to maximize the cooling effect.

8). Massage eye area

This pandemic has caused me severe retail therapy habits.  This led me to this gadget that vibrates and helps the eye product penetrate the eye area.  Battery operated, it’s perfect for the smaller parts of the face and doesn’t cause electric shock.  It feels like a soothing hum that can put you to sleep.  It also helps in the circulation around the eye area, an often neglected area.  It helps minimize puffiness, use this around 1 minute per eye area.

Soothing, helps in the circulation around the eye area.

9). Sunscreen

The Holy Grail of Skin protection, again this is water based and does not feel heavy on the face.  Since its geared for sports activity, the longevity of this sunscreen will last longer and give your UVB/UVA protection a longer coverage.  Dermatologists can never stress enough the importance of applying sunscreen as this prevents aging, wrinkles and pigmentation on the face. I’ve worn this under makeup and it doesn’t cause flashback.

I also caution Brides and clients sometimes to shy away from a high SPF as this gives a white cast on the face when photographed.  An SPF of 15-30 is good if worn under makeup.

This is the must have if you want to skip the 5 steps of skincare.

9). Lip Balm

One of my staples both in my personal and client makeup kit,  I bought this in one of my trips to France and discovered this in their pharmacies.  This was recommended by their in house sales staff as a bestseller.  It contains Honey, plant extracts, Shea Butter and Grapefruit essence, one jar is sold every 2 minutes!  It combats dry lips in the winter and she also taught me you can use this in the face when you have dry patches.  I bought a jar and 2 lip bullets to carry around with me.  It is now available locally in major department stores.

You can use this on dry patches on the face too.

Do you have any skincare products you want to share with me?

You may purchase these products online at Sephora.com; Amazon, Lazada, Shopee and in Sm and Rustans Department Stores

The Balm Cosmetics Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long lasting lipstick

Happy New lippy!

While working on a client recently, her choice of lipstick was a matte long wearing liquid lipstick, the current craze nowadays, the one that stays on your lips for days on end.  I ended up giving her the lipstick tube and as soon as I left, I went to the local Beauty Bar here in my neighbourhood to replenish the lipstick.  And then I came across

Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long lasting Liquid lipstick.  These are all from the brand The Balm Cosmetics.  I wanted to update my lipstick collection and these are the colors I ended up home with.

IMG_5128

IMG_5122

These are nude pinkish brown shades with the exception of a plum looking shade. From top to bottom, Affectionate, Charming, Sincere and Charismatic.

IMG_5120

Texture is smooth, is not runny and lasts a good 4-5 hours.  Photos below show a 6 hr time lapse of how long this liquid lipstick lasted.  Excuse the lighting, but I noticed there is a little feathering on the upper lip and is less darker as it was first applied.  I was also careful in dabbing my lips during the meal but there is still color left in fact it is still noticeable and still quite pigmented despite some feathering on the upper corners and a little bleeding on the bottom lip.

Taken at 4:00 pm Shade Affectionate

Taken at 9:52 pm. After eating a dinner and had green tea.

I like the texture of it, doesn’t have that silicon feel although it is an ingredient in the formulation, it doesn’t feel drying or doesn’t feel dry or cracked on my lips.  It has a slight peppermint flavour like a mild tingling feeling but its not so distracting.

Tips on applying a matte lipstick:

  • Exfoliate lips with a lip scrub or a DIY recipe, mix brown sugar and olive oil and mix into a paste.  Apply and scrub into lips until you feel the dead skin flakes come off.  Rinse.
  • Apply a lip primer, a good one to try is MAC Prep and Prime Lip primer
  • Apply matte lip color beginning from the bottom lip and then the upper lip.  Let stand for 15 seconds.
  • When its time to remove, use an oil based cleansing oil like Biore Cleansing oil, let it soak into the lips with a cotton pad and remove gently.

Its reasonably priced at Php775.00 and I will definitely make these lippies a  staple in my personal and pro kit.  Perfect for Bridal and everyday looks.  There are 18 shades in total, the shades are named after qualities you look for in a friend or soul mate, a matt ch made in heaven.   Like a loyal friend colors stay true and doesnt feel clingy.

Go and get these liquid lipsticks at Beauty Bar and see how these lipsticks stay committed to your beauty kit.

MAC Prep and Prime Lip is available at all MAC beauty stores.  Priced between Php 900.00- 1200.00

Beauty & Momness: Tips for moms on everyday beauty

IMG_1625

Acie Fores, together with the UMAP team members headed by Charisma Vergara President of UMAP had the privilege to be a keynote makeup artist assistant at the Beauty & Momness event in Evia Center this weekend.  Like all harried mothers with no time to spare for themselves, pampering oneself is key in keeping your sanity intact.  Beauty is not an option but an outlet to express your creativity and spark an inner joy that makes you feel you are right in this world.

In this workshop, UMAP member volunteers taught the ladies how to do their own makeup from skincare, choosing the right products that match their skin type, using the proper tools, applying proper methods and techniques to create a polished looking face ready to face any challenge.

Mom Beauty Tips:

  1.  Skincare is essential in creating a good makeup application.  The 4 key steps of a good skincare routine is cleansing, toning, moisturizing and applying sunscreen.
IMG_1830
Biore products were at the forefront of skincare as they were one of the major sponsors of the event.

2.  Choosing the right foundation or Base for your skin depends on the skin tone and type of skin.  Usually when shopping for your base, choose 3 shades of foundation closest to your skin tone and swatch each shade from the jaw line extending to your neck.  When blended, the closes  shade that blends with your neck is the right shade for you.

IMG_1836
LA Girl and Benefit Cosmetics were also on hand to provide the ladies with great looking skin.

IMG_1839
This LA Girl BB cream is a great all in one multitasker, it protects, hydrates, and blends easily,

3)  Choose earthy tones for your eye color palette.  For newbies in the makeup sphere, warm browns, plums are your best bets for our brown colored eyes.  They are complementary colors that bring out the eyes.

13263710_1195203783837139_8807757058078009857_n

4)  #Kilayislife

When you have groomed brows, half of your work is done.  Groomed brows are easier to fill in whether your preference is a pencil or shadow.  They frame the face and if you’re in hurry, killer brows and a good lipstick color is all you need.

featuredbrow
Start your brows at the end of your nose (1), the arch is above the iris of the eye, and your brow should end diagonally from your nostril to the end of your eye (3).

5)  A good lipstick color that also suits your skin tone is all you need to complete basic everyday look.  You can also wear bright colors like red or pink depending on your mood for the day.

IMG_5818
Your lipstick palette may look like this, if you’re the type to experiment and mix shades to create that perfect custom blend color just for you.

Personal Beauty Makeup Workshop with Memory Crafters and Manila Workshops

I enjoy being in the company of women specially when the topic is about personal beauty or just about anything girly related.  Last Saturday I spent the half of my afternoon with makeup newbies and they wanted a heads up on basic makeup knowhow and I was more than happy to oblige. This is why I together with Memory Crafters and Manila Workshops headed by Rikka Rederico collaborated on a workshop that teaches women how to empower themselves through the magic of makeup.

I’ll be handing over the blog today to Martine De Luna of MakeitBlissful, who agreed to be my model for that afternoon.  She claims to be a makeup virgin and for a hands on mother of two, she wanted to know how she can prepare herself ready to face the world with just a few simple steps in her makeup routine.

Hi everyone! This is Martine here, I’ll be taking over the blog today, to cover the Makeup Workshop of Acie, as a participant. I was the model for her demo portion, and I have to say I happily wanted to because any opportunity to get a makeover by Acie is totally worth it!

I arrived looking like this:

We started by having the participants take out their Biore Cleansing Pads — so handy when you need to clean your face and feel refreshed.  (This can be used in place of our water and soap when it is not available.)  According to Acie, it is “the makeup remover pad in my book.”  I agree! Each tissue is thickly saturated, which assures you that it really will remove every trace of dirt, oil and makeup. I’ve got very sensitive, break-out prone skin, so I need a product like Biore Cleansing Pads.

After cleansing, we were fortunate to have Fast Beauty Philippines there to teach us how to use serums and natural oils as moisturisers. (Did you know that as Asians, our skin type really isn’t prone to heavy cream-like moisturizers?) The Helix D Eye Serum and the Marula Oil are a serum and oil moisturizer that boost our skin defense against the elements and pollutants that wreak havoc on our skin.

Acie used some of the luxurious Marula Oil on my face, to act as a moisturiser and primer all at once. As usual, I was breaking out and had pigmentations scars, so this product soothed my skin. (I’ve been using it ever since!)

img_0921

img_0910

Acie then applied the Helix D Eye serum to my eye area, dabbing it around the eyeball area and directly on to the eye socket.  (FYI, serums usually take time to take effect since you have to apply it frequently on the area. Around 2-6 weeks usage should produce results.)

During the makeup portion proper, Acie used a simple repertoire for my face. First, it was important to apply concealer and foundation. Because I’ve got badly scarred skin, this step can’t be missed when I have my makeup done. She also used a combination of highlighters, setting powder and eyeshadows from our sponsor,  V&M Naturals, who are currently developing an all-natural makeup line:

img_0996

I love the finished result by Acie! I’m more a “less is more” girl, and she knows this, so her take on my eye makeup was a subtle smoky finish, perfect for a glowing daytime look. Thanks to the Helix D Eye Serum, in particular, and Acie’s layering of foundations, the V&M eyeshadow and highlights stuck to my eyelids for the whole afternoon till the evening! (This is me with my very fussy baby girl!)

Finally, it was the girls’ turn to get their makeup on, after Acie concluded the demo portion. Now normally, Acie’s personal makeup workshop is longer, giving her the opportunity to really do some one-on-one time with each participant. But for this round, the ladies were coached as a group, with Acie providing instruction in rotation.

img_0935

img_0934

img_0936

At the end, everyone came up with natural-looking, dusky finishes! I’m so impressed! I’ve always been fascinated at how makeup can really transform our looks instantly. Everyone looks glowing and pretty in their photos, don’t you think?

Thank you, Acie, for sharing your expertise! What I really love about Acie’s workshops are how hands-on she is during each component. Looking forward to more makeup workshops next year! Stay tuned to this blog to receive updates.

Once again, thanks to our sponsors: Biore Philippines (@biorePH), Beauty Cosmetics (@beautycosmetics, for the brushes), V&M Cosmetics (@vandmnaturals, for the mineral makeups), and Fast Beauty Philippines (@fastbeautyPH, for the Helix D Eye Serum and Marula Oil) and Costa Coffee PH for providing us an intimate venue and nourishing us with their snacks.

The Glam Squad of Happy Skin

Denise Go Ochoa, Juan Sarte, Mickey See, Jigs Mayuga, are makeup artists.   Not just makeup artists but Manila’s living legends in the beauty industry.  They are literally the dream team to call when its’ your wedding day, or a have a photoshoot in the making, or when you are a Celebrity in need of glam time.

Happy Skin just made that connection 3 degrees smaller by introducing the Glam Squad Collection.

img_1227
Glam Squad at your fingertips.

Encased in gold, these eyeshadows are pigmented and colors are very neutral, in earthy tones.  Two shadows, one light and one darker, it makes applying as simple as child’s play.  It has a very light shimmer texture but it glides on very smoothly.  The darker shades are enough to give your eyes depth and dimension.  From a day look to a smoky eye for the evening, it’s all you need for a simple glamour change.

Matte lipsticks to stay all day

The lipsticks are very matte, glides well and lasts a long time.  It has that nude retro 90’s look, nude pinky brown perfect for everyday and bridal looks.  Jigs Mayuga has a deep plum color while that of Juan Sarte’s is a bit on the dark pink nudey beige color.

img_9830

I didn’t get the Lipstick shades of  Mickey See and Denise Go Ochoa because I was running late and I promised to return and try to purchase at a later time.  I’ve tried Juan Sarte’s lipstick and it did stay for a good 6 hours without retouching.  However since I ate Chinese food that day, the oil removed a little of the lipstick and I retouched it but before reapplying, there was a bit of a stain left so the staying power is really good.  Is this  Viagra Glam?

img_1233
No excuse to have bad eyebrow days.  Shade is Medium Brown

I would compare this to the Smashbox eyebrow pencil.  It twists on one end with a very sword like shape and its very thin to give you precise hair like strokes on your eyebrows.  Grooming them into place is simple with a turn on the other end of the pencil for a tinted brow gel.  It’s pretty good, I would compare this to  its Japanese and US brand counterparts and it does the job of giving you perfectly arched eyebrows.

Lock in that lip color with this smooth lip liner.

First Date is the name of this lip liner. This can go with any of the matte lipsticks in the Glam Squad collection.

This lip liner is not part of the Glam Squad collection.  I just had to buy it because I wanted to get the free gift with purchase kikay kit bag.  Also in gold.

Final Thoughts:

The collection is  a very precise  collection, just like a well curated art gallery.  All in earthy tones, it is  a very neutral palette that can take you from day to night in a simple tap of a brush.  Pigmentation and coloration is good, not chalky, it spreads smoothly and blends well.  However, there is some pigment fallout but not that significant.   You may start with the eye makeup first, then clean up any fallout and  apply your base or foundation,  concealer and the rest of your makeup after.

The brow pencil applicator needs improvement though, as it is very fragile.  I just twisted it once to reveal the color and 1/4 of its refill broke off.  It is not  a decision breaker but it needs refinement in the twist type design.

The eye shadow palette inside is housed in a sponge like  foam that  protects it from fall.   The metal pans is anchored by a smidgen of glue that is not enough to hold it in place.  I mentioned this to the sales associate and I had mine replaced as one of the metal pans fell off.

Lipstick shades are all on trend with the matte lipstick bandwagon craze but  very well suited to the Asian skin tone.  You can transform  these colors  from sophisticated to glam and chic depending on the shade you get.  It’s matte enough to last half a day with one touch up only.

Get your glam squad collection fast, stocks  are running quickly,  get  all  four of them and have  the Glam Squad at your fingertips.

Glam Squad eyeshadow duo is priced at P899.00, Glam Squad Arch Definer and Brow Mascara is P949.00, Glam Squad Matte lipstick is P699.00 and the Shut up and Kiss Me  Moisturising Matte Lip Liner is P499.00  Available at www.happyskincosmetics.com, Beauty Bar outlets and select SM Beauty Counters.

img_0083This is from the collection of Heart Evangelista and it is plum pinky brown beige shade which I think is perfect for everyday.  Line your entire lip with this and apply a clear gloss on top in place of your lipstick.

img_0082
Swatch of First Date lip liner

My thoughts:

I love this collection and like a beautiful art gallery, it is a well curated set, very precise, collection is small enough to give you what you essentially need to make you look like a celebrity.  You can never go wrong with earthy neutral colors since it is universally flattering.

Packaging however can be improved, the eye palette discs have a tendency to fall off the compact.  It is only held with a tiny smidgen of glue.  The eye pencil mechanism is very sensitive, I had to exchange mine because the eyebrow refill broke in half and I only twisted it once.

Will this be a kit staple?  Yes, I can’t wait for the other collaborations with other makeup

Human Nature, a love story that we need to feel good about.

I came across Human Nature products when a friend of mine, shared her hand sanitiser with me in one of our makeover workshops together.    She’s into all natural, organic products since she is very allergic to so many ingredients.  The smell was citrusy and since I’m partial to citrus fragrances, I  looked at the bottle and saw it was Human Nature.

Curiously enough, I was handed a simple pizza box like gift from a few friends from Human Nature and guess what, inside the box was the citrus hand sanitiser my friend had!  Want to see more from what was inside my happy box?  Scroll down.

Last January 18 2016, I had the chance to make up the beautiful Pia Angeles during her wedding in St. Joseph The Worker Parish, Baguio. (The reception followed at the Camp John Hay Clubhouse.) Pia comes from a family that like to cook — her mother, Lenee Recio Angeles, makes an amazing chicken relleno! Speaking of family, though: Pia’s wedding was planned and brought to life by all of her friends who had talents and businesses that they wanted to share with her.  Her giveaways were so reflective of her easy going nature: an eco friendly bag with goodies from Baguio, all lovingly put together by her friends and family.   I also love the hashtag that was chosen for that special day, #kprinmind2016 a play on their initials.   Unforgettable diba?.

As a bride, Pia is very down to earth bride no fuss not difficult at all. She gave me her full trust on how she would look on her wedding day and I was very happy I was able to deliver!

1. Please tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, passions?
I’m Pia, I was a single mom to a 6 year old boy, Andres. I work 2 jobs, mostly financial work for corporations. I handle the finances and do the budgeting and day to day accounting of funds. I enjoy both my jobs… and it still allows me to be home by 6 to spend time with my family. I enjoy cooking and baking… It is really my passion. If I’m stressed, I cook or bake something and even if I have to clean up after, I don’t get as tired as I should be. I enjoy cooking and baking with my son… I teach him a thing or two. We also enjoy doing arts and crafts together.. from DIY kiddie storages, diy chalk paint, bottles, kids toys and magnets… I love doing all these things with Andres and Kevin even if Kevin always outshines me! Ha ha!

2. How did you find out about me? What made you want to work with me?
I met Acie last 2015 during my best friend’s wedding.  Her sister, Mariella Uy learned about her from her good friend, Monse del Rosario. Mariella got Acie to do make up for Maia’s bridesmaids. I was pleasantly surprised with my make up during that date — I think by far the best I’ve had! (and I’ve been a bridesmaid a few times). Everyone complemented my make up during the wedding. My dad even said “Ay maganda ka pala!” That’s his carino to me… Hehe! But that means he was also pleasantly surprised with how pretty I was.  So the day I got engaged, I remembered Acie and thought, “Hey, I want her to do my make up for my wedding!”

3. How did you like the outcome of our time together, for your special day?

I enjoyed our sessions and I think both my mom and sister also did. Acie and her team were on schedule and professional.  It was also a very light session: no one was panicking, no one was rushing (or so I think! Haha!). Acie and JayMar really knew how to work with photographers and videographers. It was easy. I had such a good time.

4. What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love? Could you share that photo with us?

One special memory I had during the wedding was my wedding march… Seeing my son waiting for me… made me nervous but excited… seeing my parents made me more excited too…. and to see all my gue

sts smiling.. I felt so much love and warmth from everyone! Finally… seeing my fiance — I couldn’t stop smiling! Everything just felt right, everything felt magical.

Martine De Luna for Modern Living TV

The last time I glammed up Martine de Luna of makeitblissful.com was about a year ago when we did a shoot together with Michi Calica Sotto at her atelier and she had a bun in the oven.  Today I was able to glam her up again for an interview with Stephanie Zubiri for her show, Modern Living TV on ANC. These days, she now has her 1 year-old daughter Krista Valentina in tow, who joined in the beauty action. She requested for a natural look and I was just more than happy to oblige.  Hair styling was courtesy of Rikki Suarez.

Martine’s skin was on the dry side although I know she leans on the normal to combination skin. However, due to hormonal changes, her skin needed extra hydration.

I’ve rediscovered this eyeshadow and used this as an eyelid primer that gives her eyes a brightening effect on the inner corners of her eyes. Its MAC’s Pearl frost. Love this also as a highlighter on the cheekbones and middle of the nose. It’s very subtle but gives your skin an extra glow.

Marula Oil , the next oil on the block, and why you need it in your beauty regimen

We’ve all heard about the benefits of Argan oil, in fact it s included in the ingredient list of many of our beauty products from hair serums to massage oils.  Argan Oil is known for its hydrating and anti aging benefits because of its high fatty acids and Vitamin E content, making it an all in one beauty powerhouse.

More recently, I received a beautiful gift from a former colleague, Rhoda Campos Aldanese that contained another Liquid gold, Marula Oil (read it here)  The box also contains a big block of chocolate derived from the cocoa beans from the Ivory Coast West Africa.  Tavoletta chocolate is best used for hot chocolate in the mornings and even if its not Christmas, I wouldn’t mind a cup of this warm rich chocolate drink to start my day.  Chocolates are also rich in antioxidants and flavanoids, compounds produced by plants that are beneficial to cardiovascular health and cell renewal.

Liquid Gold, Marula Oil

What It is

  • Marula oil is derived from the fruit of the Marula tree in Africa, and only the fallen fruit is collected and gathered by the women of East Africa.  It is brought to collection points where the fruit pulp is removed for jams and juices and the shells are used for charcoal.  This process protects and adds value to the wild strands of the tree and provide a sustainable livelihood for the community making it a member of the Fair Trade Association and Green America.
  • The cold process it undergoes without the inducement of heat or chemical treatments make it 100 % pure capturing all its beneficial properties more effective in its application.
  • The Ingredients are 99% Marula oil, 1% essential oil fragrance (Linalool and Limonene) that help make it an antioxidant that provides intense hydration, soothing properties and gives the skin radiance and glow.  It does not contain Parabens, Phthalates, and Sulfates than can irritate skin.
  • Marula by John Paul Selects is named after John Paul DeJoria, the founder of John Paul Mitchell haircare systems, an entrepreneur that supports sustainability and social causes.

It has a pipette that dispenses precious drops of oil. Pump once and massage between hands and apply on your face.

How to incorporate the oil in your beauty routine

  • Used alone as an anti aging moisturizer applied on the face and neck area 2x/day.
  • Add 1-2 drops of the oil to your favorite foundation to give you a dewy glow.
  • Can be used as a primer prior to makeup application.
  • Applied to soothe peels, sunburn or after facial treatments.
  • Can be mixed with other facial products like moisturizers, mask or cleansers for an elasticity boost.

What it feels like

I’ve only used this oil the past week, and tested it during the day and night.  Lightweight and easily absorbed, it provides a satin finish after with no greasy after feel.  It does feel plumped up and ready for the next step which is the makeup application.  At night when I applied it, the next morning, my face felt like it drank 8 glasses of water, it felt supple and so so soft to the touch.  The smell is very pleasant, with a hint of citrus but it disappears in a few seconds.  The pipette it comes in is sleekly designed and opens up when you twist it open and dispenses the the right amount of drops.

I’ve begun to love this new variable in my skincare routine and I’m getting the sinking feeling, my jars of moisturizers will not get the attention and love it deserves because there’s a new kid on the block showing off.  I was close to getting the Clarins Facial Lotus oil that has been the Holy Grail of facial oils by top makeup artists.  I hesitated because I have a drawerful of moisturizers to play around with.  Marula Oil is my new love and knowing that is created through a sustainable livelihood, it has definitely sealed its place in my own piece of beauty heaven.

Two of my favorite things to have, chocolate and oil, both containing good fat to use without the guilt.

Marula Oil is available at the beauty departments of SM Aura, SM  Makati, SM North Edsa and SM MOA.  Sold at P2980.00 for the 30 oz. bottle and P4980.00 for the 50 ml. bottle.  Tavoletta Chocolate bars are available at Villa Del Conte outlets (http://www.villadelcontecioccolato.com/tavoletta/)

March 8 was International Women’s Day.  Wednesday March 9 was a beautiful reminder of what International Women’s day was about.

I was recently invited by a fellow southerner and batchmate of my sister, Martha Orosa Uy, to spend an afternoon with her and a few ladies (we were a total of 50 that day) to listen to inspiring stories that lift the spirit and learn from the varied experiences of the speakers that day.    It was a coming together of women who want to be inspired in their lives in a TEDtalk kind of way.

Martha Orosa Uy, together with 9 other ladies formed an informal group called BIG last December 2015 , an acronym for Build, Inspire and Give whose mission statement is to “start a revolution where stories are shared and entrusted to others so we may understand and become better versions of ourselves, whether that’s being a mother, wife, friend, sister  or boss or employee” .  Empowering oneself through sharing life experiences is a result of a woman’s wisdom gained from the community she lives and participates in.  What a beautiful thought to live one’s life isnt it?

Empowerment is a catchphrase you didn’t hear in the past few decades until only recently.   An issue more relevant than ever, woman empowerment simply means to live our lives freely with a sense of self worth, respect and dignity, to make their own informed choices and decisions and to have control of her life both within and outside the home and workplace. This being the foundation of which the group is formed, every month, a theme is selected, and resource speakers are invited to share their experiences and expertise based on the theme of the month.  December was The Greatest Gift, January was New Beginnings, February was about Love You, Love Me , and March is So, what do you do?

The first speaker was Ambassador of the Philippines to New Zealand, Virginia Benavides who shared with us the struggles, the highs and lows, and how the unshakable Filipino spirit of  bayanihan, faith and love for her country has enriched and carried her through her diplomatic life.  Her personal story of being assigned to Brunei was her most difficult and rewarding posting due to the strict compliance of the Muslim laws  prohibiting her from practicing her faith publicly.  Despite this hindrance, her faith became stronger as it challenged her to live it out and put it into practice which validated her and her job as a diplomat.

One of her tasks is to see to it that the welfare of the Filipino community is protected and looked after by them when they are oppressed, abused and taken advantage of.  She dreams (I certainly agree with her on this one), that one day the Philippine government will no longer rely on our people to look for better opportunities abroad to support their families.   Filipinos who work abroad are highly treasured and in demand by employers mainly because they give and serve to the best of their abilities. Values of family, respect, hard work and our faith makes us resilient in the face of adversity inspite of the difficult social, physical and economic circumstances they endure being in a strange land.

The second speaker was Pastor Benjamin Cruz, National Director of Living Waters Ministry who shared his story of personal struggle between his sexuality and serving the Lord.   His inner conflict stems from his suppression so he can live his life according to the dictates and norms of society.  Now married to his wife Hazel,   his epiphany came when he was shifting ministries to avoid being caught in his secret and that he cannot practice his faith due to this hindrance that was preventing him to be his truthful self.  He found his truth in the humblest of ways in the eyes of children in a game of ping pong.    The Lord always presents himself in the most simplest manner, this time Life Lesson 101 mirroring himself and speaking from the heart with love.

Pastor Cruz became my Aha moment.  As a wife, mother, sister and friend   the different hats we wear in our lives is the layer that makes us beautifully flawed and complicated, resilient and vulnerable, simple and complicated, to become the best in what we need to do in the situation or to do what is expected of us.  Isnt this the virtue of being human?  We are shaped by our circumstances, childhood and environment, “We are all broken, we just play it differently”, well said by Pastor Cruz.

The afternoon mood was artistically complemented by Marilen Espiritu, one of the founding members of the group whose creative genius raised my bar in the hosting aspect.  Coming into her sprawling home, the scene captured the essence of what a woman is, a  life fulfilled and expressed in her art form which is entertaining.  God is truly in the details, Here’s why.

Truly a sight for all the senses, the beautiful spread laid out for us made the afternoon very special despite the unforgiving heat.  It was a meaningful afternoon, I left with the feeling like I came from a spiritual retreat, your mind is clear, your spirit refreshed and invigorated, you gained a new perspective.  Gratitude in my heart.

How they See Acie Avant Garde Look

This time, a fellow member of the Unified Makeup Artists of the Philippines, Maryann Obias, did my makeover.  It was actually a makeup peg for a fashion show that we provided services for and the makeup peg was an elongated, exaggerated black cat eye to evoke drama.  Bold red lips and heavy contoured cheeks completed the look.  This is what went on during our Polishing workshop that day.

Obviously, this is a look that will merit stares, and thoughts of What-was-she-thinking?   I liked the way it made me look very edgy and hip and worthy of a editorial photo shoot (although that didn’t happen).  Despite the few products used to create this look,  a good dose of patience and a pair of steady hands is required to pull this off.

Here is my own take on the avant garde look.  This is an old photo of me taken during December 2014 when I had a client that needed a Chinese Empress Look for their Christmas Party.  I was doing a sample look for the client.
