Inglot Bridal Seminar with Cherry Pacheco

Cherry Pacheco, a senior makeup artist affiliate of Inglot Cosmetics Philippines, recently indulged members of United Makeup Artists of the Philippines with a Bridal Demo at their Glorietta 5 branch.  I couldn’t pass this up since I’m always a fan of continuing education and Inglot Cosmetics Philippines is one of the cosmetics brand that I’m beginning to fall in love with.  Again, its not a basic demo, you have to come with the understanding of basic makeup application.  My love affair began with their most best selling gel liner no. 77.  It’s black inky color is unbelievably smooth and creamy and budgeproof.  It’s not exactly waterproof but its great for my needs.  I also have their nail ridge filler which lives up to its name, it leaves a smooth mantle over the nail preparing it for nail color.  I am hooked.

Inglot-AMC-Gel-Eyeliner-77-Black
Inky Black Gel Eyeliner no. 77. Inglot’s best selling item.

Her Tips:

1)  Begin with a very clean and smooth canvas.  Face should be prepped prior to the application, cleansed, toned, moisturized and primed, according to the skin type of the client or Bride.  Inglot’s Under Base Mattifiying base is considered the primer of all gods.

IMG_5765
Primer of all gods.

2)  Determine the bride’s skin tone and undertones by properly matching 1-2 shades of Foundation on the cheek to the jawline to see which shade matches her face.  The right color should blend seamlessly on the face.  When skin is acidic, it means that when foundation is applied, your skin color turns dark or gray after a few minutes.  This applies to people with oily skin.  To counteract this, apply a toner to the face,  apply a primer to the face prior to the foundation to act as a barrier between the skin and makeup and choose a foundation that is one shade lighter than your skintone.  This way, when your face casts a darker hue, it will match your skin tone perfectly.

IMG_5758
The shade that matched the model’s face is the one on the left. It was lighter than her usual shade because she is acidic.
IMG_5769
HD Foundation gives a dewy satin finish

3)  Begin applying the foundation with a brush on the upper half of the face until the eyebrows and extending to the lower part of the face where her upper cheekbones begin.  The perimeter of the face should be a little darker to give depth and warmth to the face.

Mattifying powder was used and applied with a sponge after foundation was applied.
IMG_5772
One of their best selling items their mattifiying powder.

4)  Contour and Highlight. When applying depth, highlight and warmth to the skin, Cherry uses powder to achieve this.

IMG_5822
Contour Palette
IMG_5781
Dark powder was applied from the top of the ear and blended towards the center of the face stopping in the lower cheek area. Do not go past the lips.

4)  Eyebrows should be properly groomed so placement of color can be applied correctly.  Brush the hairs in an upward stroke to see where the hair growth lies and where color should be applied.

IMG_5779
Perfectly groomed eyebrows and a face that has depth.

IMG_5777 5)  Eyeshadow

IMG_5833
Her Freedom Palette of choice. Love love the color on the bottom row, 2nd to the left. This is what she applied on the eyelid using her ring finger and blended to perfection.
IMG_5785
She blended the eyeshadow and added a darker matte color on the outer crease or V shape to accentuate the eyes.
IMG_5784
A lighter shade was applied in the inner corner of the eyes and bottom lashes to make the eyes pop.

6)  Eyeliner and Lashes

IMG_5796
Brown Waterproof eyeliner was used in the bottom of the lashes vertically and smudged 3/4 of the way.

7)  Blush

IMG_5804
Peach toned blushes work well with Asian skin tones. You may mix a pink toned blush to give the face more dimension.
IMG_5805
Work in circular motions from the apples of the cheeks and blend outwards.

8)  Lips

IMG_5818
Lip Palette to die for.   It is super pigmented a little goes a long way.  She used the 2 colors on the bottom row, 2nd to the left and the middle shade and mixed the two to get a peachy pink color.
IMG_5812
Lip color should match the undertone and color of the blush to create harmony in the face.

After. Xyrene is ready to walk down the aisle, the shopping aisle that is.

A promo and discount offer was offered to us artists which made it easier for us to justify our vanity cravings.  It is easy to be lost and overwhelmed when you walk into the store but trust the staff to offer their warm assistance  in narrowing your choices.  Despite the slight frenzy, I was able to make good choices in my attempt to understand their Freedom Palette selling point.    Their palettes are all magnetic, colors are easy to put in and talk about portability, everything you need is customized for you when you slip them in those compact holes.

IMG_2607_2
My custom bridal eyeshadow palette chosen for me.

The only bad point I can think of is that since the creamy pigments like lipsticks and cream concealers melt so quickly in our heat, I end up putting them in the refrigerator to harden them a bit.  Colors are named in a series of 3 numbers, I have a difficult time remembering them sometimes.    I guess this was deliberately done since this line is a brainchild of a polish Chemist Wojchiek Inglot, who wanted to produce cosmetics that are paraben free and free of those harmful ingredients you find in some cosmetic brands.  Chemists work with formulas and numbers hence the number sequence in their branding.  As a result, Inglot Cosmetics is 20-30% more affordable than their counterparts.  I call it genius, their magnetized palettes are a makeup artist’s dream, they all stack up in your kits.  Truly Heaven sent.

Behind the Kit with Acie Fores

This is a new section of my blog where I’ll be featuring makeup artists. I believe in the adage “community not competition” when it comes to the “cut-throatness” of this industry, that we can all learn from one another as artists and as colleagues. I hope you agree with me! And so, I’ll begin this series with my very own “behind the kit” responses, so that you can get a glimpse of my tools of the trade that enable me to magically transform and enhance anyone.

1.  What inspired you to get into makeup and did you immediately know that’s what you wanted to do?

I did not plan my life dreaming about this as a career, but I was always mesmerized with how makeup can enhance a woman’s beauty by observing my mother when I was growing up.   The turning point that I decided to go and make it a second career change was when I took up a Basic course at SOFA, and I became part of the hair and makeup team for the fashion show being held for its graduates.  I thought to myself that “I can make this work and I want to give it my all and make something out of this”.

3

4

2.  Are you self taught or did you train somewhere?

I was trained under Ericka Saenz for  SOFA, Georginna Desuasido, Yuki Geraldo, Monica,  Mio Robo and Mikee Raymundo of Makeup Professionel, CAS and Jenn Delica.     I continue to learn from the artists that I work with by observing and absorbing their styles and techniques and by going to seminars that are field related.  To be relevant, fresh and dynamic, constant learning  is requisite for being ahead of the game.

DSC02099

3. What’s your makeup style?

I am inspired by fresh clean looks, I love a classic golden age Hollywood look like the 40’s and 50’s which produced so many icons like Lauren Bacall, Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly,  to name a few.  I am also inspired by the flamboyant 80’s and pared down 90’s which are totally different in their beauty points of view.  This current milenium decade is also my favorite place to be in because all the rules are broken and it is a turning point in the advancement of cosmetic technology and research which make our lives as makeup artists so much easier.

4.  Which product would you advise someone to never leave home without?

I never leave home without my eyeglasses!  Being in my late 40’s, I’ve grown to appreciate and see the importance of wearing sunscreen.  Aside from that, my lipsticks.  Tom Ford is a current love.  And oh, Concealer!  It’s my answer to my universe

5.  How do you relax?

I do indulge in occasional massages, foot reflexology, Pilates and Yoga.

6.  Which Person or thing defines beauty for you?

I like women who are strong, and I also like women who have flaws, perfection is not my goal.  I admire women who have paved the way and made a difference to give us a voice and created opportunities and certain freedoms that we enjoy now.

INXS

photo 3-2

7.  Which makeup artist/s has helped you along the way in your career?  Whose work do you look up to?

Alee Benson, Jenn Delica, Tony Dusich, Pia Reyes, Cristina Cacnio, Rikki Suarez,  Toni Gutierrez and all of my other friends in the industry,  They continue to inspire me with their work and work ethic, and we always uplift and support each other. Locally, it would be Juan Sarte, Jigs Mayuga, Fanny Serrano, Patrick Rosas, Denise and Effie Go.  Internationally, Way Bandy, Scott Barnes, Kevin James Bennett, Kevin Aucoin, Mary Greenwell,  Val Garland,  Pat Mcgrath,  Kabuki, Bobbi Brown, Lisa Eldridge, and Charlotte Tillbury all for their unrivalled creativity and for making women look effortlessly gorgeous which is something I have always aimed to achieve for myself.

8.  Do you prefer to work on set shooting or with weddings?

Both are good avenues I enjoy being in, I enjoy the intensity of it.  On Shoots, its always making yourself better while working as a team to create a beautiful image, for weddings and red carpet events, its all the tension, the emotions,  very nerve racking waiting to see how they look in photos.  I feel so privileged to be part of it all.

9.  What’s the best advice a fellow professional has ever given you?

Find your niche.  Less is more.

10.   Which one product do you wish you could have or create, to make your life easier?

A makeup bag or trolley that performs like a drone.

11.   Describe yourself in one word.

Inspired.

12. Who would be in and where would your Your Dream Shoot be?

Location –  Palawan or the Maldives

Photographer –  Marc Nicdao

Model(s) –  Fatima Rabago and Vanessa Matsunaga

Behind the Kit interview

Makeup Chats with Kira Ramirez

IMG_2506_2
Today, I’m talking with my Marsala makeover subject and friend, fellow beauty blogger Kira Ramirez! After we bonded over cosmetics and coffee, I also invited her to be interviewed for the blog. I love finding out about her beauty routine and makeup preferences, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy her answers and find them helpful, too!
1. What are your daily makeup essentials?
Kira Ramirez (K): My skin care and makeup routine is pretty straightforward. I apply Armada 60 all over my face (this serves as my base), then apply my Ellana Minerals Foundation using a kabuki brush. I then define my eyebrows using Kate Eyebrow Pencil in BR-2 (it has a fine tip that makes shading and shaping so easy), apply my Ellana Minerals Blush in Kitten on the apples of my cheeks, and finally curl my lashes using Koji eyelash curler and apply my favorite Browhaus HD Mascara.
I usually go for red lipsticks since my looks is simple, my current fave is L’Oreal in Blaze of Red.
2. How was it during your Marsala makeover with me? Can you tell me about your experience during the session?
K: We were not able to really talk during our last blogger event at SkinLux, so I really enjoyed learning more about you and your craft, and how passionate you are about makeup. I am more of a skin care enthusiast and the first thing I noticed is your impeccable skin, and I just had to know your secret, haha! Good thing we both agreed on the importance of Vitamin C and a good eye cream product, since these are non-negotiables for me as well.
IMG_2507_2
The whole experience was actually pretty fun! Although I don’t wear lots of makeup on a regular basis, I do enjoy makeovers and learning about the makeup artists’ favorite products! You could say, I’m the type of person who likes peeking into kikay kits (you can learn a lot about a person just by checking out their favorite shade of lipstick).
3. What did you like most about the finished result?
K: Marsala is a subtle seductive shade and I like how Acie made it very wearable and emphasized my chinita eyes. The flirty lashes finished the look perfectly!
4. As someone who works in the beauty industry, what are your personal thoughts about Marsala as color of the year?
K: Marsala is such a nice versatile color that sort of just grew on me after the makeover. I’ve been wearing this on my lips ever since Acie showed me how to mix L’Oreal Bare Moka and EL Forbidden, great when worn on their own but creates a gorgeous Marsala color when combined. I’d say it works well on all skintones, and gives a sophisticated, sort of “grown up” color without being too vampy (ala deep berry) or vulgar (ala fire engine reds). Marsala is definitely something you can wear all year round whether on your eyes, lips, cheeks, or nails.

Happy Skin Review Moisturing Lippies and Eye Pencils

I’ve been late to the party in reviewing this, but when I decided to improve my makeup haul this year, the soda pop eye catching color display at Beauty Bar in Greenbelt 5 caught my attention, and I was drawn to the Lipsticks or Lippies as they are called.  The Eye Candy eye pencils by Happy Skin Cosmetics were given during a blog event by Martine de Luna entitled the Blissmakerie 2014.

IMG_1899

Shut Up And Kiss Me Moisturizing Lippies sure live up to its claim, it is a mix of shea butter, gloss and lip color in one.  It applies very creamy.  I’ve purchased the Honeymoon Glow and Naughty and Nice, again both aptly named for a bridal experience.  Collagen infused, your lips will love you for its lip plumping effect.

IMG_2074
HoneyMoon Glow is more peachy toned while Naughty N Nice has a plum berry tone.  I love the pencil shape, you can also twist it to close and open when it gets down to a smaller point.

Overall, the Moisturizing lipsticks are true to their claim: very moisturizing and very pigmented.  However, I find myself reapplying more than often due to its balmy and creamy texture, but it’s good for a few hours.  This is not a bad thing, it makes me reach for it even if I don’t need a retouch.  The range of colors are suited to a global skin tone, ranging from nudes to reds, so I feel they were specifically chosen for me.  I felt like buying the entire range! After all it is well priced, between P499.00 -549.00, and one can easily collect and build her lipstick collection without the guilt.

The eyeliners were quite a surprise, though. Cotton Candy and Butterscotch are ideal for rimming underneath the lashes to make the eyes look bigger, while Watermelon and Plum are good for smokey looks or can be worn everyday for a bold pop of color in the eyes.  The big plus is that it is smear, water and budgeproof.  It can’t get any better than that.  (My only beef is, the pencil is short and can be easily be used up for everyday use.  Maybe a twist type is in the works?)

What are your favorite Happy Skin products?

Happy Skin products are available at Beauty Bar, Select SM Dept stores and Plains and Prints boutiques.

Marsala Photo Tutorial Eyes, Brows, Cheeks and Lips

I had the opportunity to do a mini makeover on my friend and fellow blogger Kira Ramirez the other week. Since I wanted to play around a bit with the Pantone color of the year, Marsala, I knew I needed a willing model who had the right skin tone and face shape for the look I wanted to create. Kira fit the bill, and so we scheduled a makeup date to test drive the look.

Here’s what I used:

Antonio – Rodriguez Nuptials

I love my job.  Weddings are usually that particular time where emotions of happiness, joy and sadness come into play.  I was touched when my friend Rachelle Almario called me to ask if I was available on February 11 to do the hair and makeup of her best friend Lisa Antonio.  It was her wedding gift to them.  This is the stuff I live for.

IMG_7694
BFF. Warms my heart.

Lisa and I share 2 things in common, Rachelle is also one of my good friends and that we both just moved into the Alabang area recently, having our homes built within the same year in 2014.    Lisa is an architect, she carries the lineage of the late National Artist Ramon Antonio and her famous aunts the Veloso sisters who are well known for their made to order clothes for Manila’s chic society.  Her well appointed home with clean and  crisp lines give you an indication of her choice in wedding style.  The epitome of chic and sophistication echo the simplicity of her gown bought from Rosa Clara.

Lisa conveyed her wishes to me by making her hair and makeup very simple, nothing too contrived just effortless.  She looked to Audrey Hepburn and Carolina Herrera as her inspiration and immediately I knew what direction she wanted.

An Interview with Gugu Francisco

IMG_8097

This interview features student and model Maria Alexandra Victoria Pueo, better known as “Gugu” Francisco. She modeled a bridal look for the Acie Fores website, and shares her work experience as well her favorite aspects about working with Acie, whom she fondly refers to as “Tita Acie.”  Photos by Jack Alindahao and Styling by Alexandra Lapa The Reluctant Stylista and Hair by Rikki Suarez

1. What did you enjoy about working with Acie? What did you like about her makeup style, as well as her work style/ethic?

Tita Acie was very professional and easy to work with because she was accommodating and even ordered pizza for me (haha!). She also made our shoot fun by telling jokes, which helped me stay awake even f I only had 3 hours before the shoot. Her makeup was neat and organized — which may seem like it is not a big deal, but you are assured that you’re working with a professional. You know this is true when you see she takes good care of her things and values them by keeping the brushes and sponges clean all the time, after working. I like that she listens to my suggestions, and I feel like she has a special touch for each model which clearly shows on her work. She has mastered the balance of being accommodating and professionalism which are I believe are important to succeed in her field.

2. What are some of your favorite features on your face, and how was Acie able to highlight these? How did her work on you make you feel?

I liked how she treated my eyes: Since they are hooded and deep set, they need a specific stroke to be enhanced. There are certain colours of eye shadow that don’t work for me — like black, since I have hazel eyes and it will over power them. She made sure my eyes were highlighted, bringing the best out in them. Next are my cheeks: Since i am a plus size model, it is important for any make up artist to contour my face properly, especially my cheeks, temples and double chin, to enhance the features but not make me look bigger. She already knew how to manually modify my face even before the shoot went on and knew which parts to highlight to react well with the studio lights.

3. Can you share some photos with us of your look by Acie Fores?

IMG_7885

IMG_8113

IMG_8083

4. What are some of your favorite makeup products/must-haves for daily wear?

For my sunblock, I use VMV as prescribed by my derma. For my moisturizer, I use the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum in Bisque. For my blush, I use MAC’s Beauty powder blush in Formal, and my lipstick is MAC’s CremeSheen in How Darling. For my mascara, I use They’re Real by Benefit. Tools: I use the Real Technique brushes, the on-location mini brush trio set, specifically.

I had the privilege of being interviewed and featured in Manila’s top lifestyle hub, When in Manila, a couple of weeks ago when writer/columnist Tonette Nicolas of The Health Junkie, was assigned to do the write-up. We met up with my friend and blog coach, Martine de Luna at the EDSA Beverage Design Studio, to do a makeover on Tonette, to showcase the “Acie Fores makeup” style and aesthetic. We did a “workday to weekend” transformation. Here are some of my favorite shots of Tonette from the shoot.

Featured Products: My Singapore Haul

IMG_5160

Singapore was my brief respite last month mainly for my daughter’s gymnastics s competition held at Bishan Stadium.  Trying to squeeze my shopping habit in between her training schedule had proved to be a fun experience.  Sephora, Takashimaya, MAC Cosmetics, Guardian Pharmacy and Sasa have been my “candy land” and mecca of sorts when I’m visiting.  In Hong Kong, it would be the same, except that Mannings Pharmacy is the counterpart of Guardian.

So described below are my “hauls” to satisfy my cosmetic addiction although if I had a bigger budget,  I probably would have a preferred client card from the Cosmetics Department of Takashimaya Dept Store.  Sadly, no.  Some of these items are not new products, but sometimes I am a late bloomer and I usually take a second look and convince myself to just go out of my box sometimes and try them.  Below is a recap.

My Singapore Haul

Top going clockwise

MAC Mineralize Charged Water Moisturizing Gel –  Lately, I’ve been looking for light moisturizers that doesn’t feel heavy on my face , particularly now with the change in weather, its been so humid.  Applying this lightweight cream gel feels so light and literally cool on your face, it is quickly absorbed.  Perfect when you’re in a rush and need to apply concealer or foundation right after, it doesn’t slip and slide off.  The effect on the skin is similar to that of a primer, it leaves a thin film on your skin but acts like a barrier and protection from the elements in the air.

Hourglass Veil Primer –   I first tried this primer at a Sephora store in the US and was completely hooked over by its claim that it provides extra wear for your makeup’s staying power.  It really does.  It definitely is a pricey primer but so worth it.  I just wish it came in a bigger bottle.

Laura Mercier Secret Finish + Mattifying Cream  –  I know I know, 2 primers?  I’m a sucker for anything that makes my makeup last longer.  I recently read that this product is the holy grail of mattifiers.  Used under or over makeup, it soaks up the oil on the face like a Bounty paper towel.  It’s that good.

Hakuhodo Cream/Liquid Brush  –  Hakuhodo is the Rolls Royce of brushes and it is pricey.  It makes use of goat hair and each brush is handmade which makes it the most sought after line of brushes.  Hakuhodo is as old as the Geisha industry and famously used by them.   Called the Itabake brush, I saw this being used by a famous US  makeup artist to apply cream contour and when he blended it using this brush, it seemed so seamless and there were no visible brush strokes on the face as opposed to using a foundation brush.  I had to try it for myself.

Hakuhodo J 5521 Highlighting Brush –  Also made out goat hair, the tapered end is good for applying highlighter on the high points on the face.  This brush will make you or your client feel so relaxed, its that soft.

Cyber Colour Eyeliner and Liquid Eyeliner duo –  While my personal preference is a gel liner, this was given to me by the Sasa ladies as a Gift with purchase.  The other end is a liquid eyeliner while the other end is a pencil pen.  The only drawback is that it is difficult to snap back on after using it, but otherwise it is waterproof.

Lorea’L Eyebrow pencil in Light Brown 02  –    I saw this being used in the Lorea’l workshop that I attended last August.  While I admire all those YouTubers who preach perfectly stenciled brows as the bomb, Miss Gex Garcia showed us how to wow the brow without looking too dark or harsh.  Again I was hooked on this product.  This has been out of stock quite a bit so I made it a point to stock up on this while I was at Sasa.

The Balm Bahama Mama Bronzer   –   I needed a new bronzer since my other bronzer broke out in pieces after a gig and it signaled me to buy one without the fragile packaging.  Housed in a sturdy carton like box, it definitely was a winner for me.  Plus I don’t look orange is a big plus.  What can I say, I’m a late bloomer in discovering this wonder powder.  It also doubles as an eye shadow, how’s that for multitasking?

La Roche Posay Anthelios 30++ Sunscreen protection –  Packaging is tops, it has a nozzle like tube that squirts out the right amount for your face.  It has UVA And UVB protection and when applied, it has a mattifying effect, not greasy on the face.  Shine go away.

Bioderma Sebium H2O –  One of my favorite makeup removers next to my cult favorite Ponds.  Why? Fastest makeup remover without the tugging and pulling.  Your face is back to its natural state in seconds.  Its good for those with sensitive skin too.  I hoard this stuff!

Behind the Scenes: Interview with Tina Henson

I call her my Electric fan.   Tina has been my muse/model of sorts.  Good Bone structure, check,  lithe and model proportions, check.  It helps too when she always encourages you to do your best and is very easy to please.  Call it mutual admiration, she best epitomises what I look for in a dream client, her words are always ‘ikaw na bahala’ or “its up to you what looks best on me”.  Despite her minimal look of a bare face and a bold lip, she pulls it off very effortlessly.  Her shameless plug interview with me humbles me no end and I thank her for making me her artist of choice.  Below is the light chat we had.

1. For what kind of event(s) did you hire Acie to create your look?

These are some of as far as I can recall. I may have missed one or two since Acie has been doing my make-up and my daughter’s (Marga) from the time she began her career in this field.

003 Sister Sandy Wedding - July 2011
My sister, Sandy’s Wedding (July, 2011) – My make-up, Marga’s, the Bride’s (Sandy’s) and my other sister’s (Nadine’s)
007 Velada Oct 15&16, 2011
My Assumption High School Velada: 25th Anniversary (October 15 & 16, 2011) – My make-up on both days and on the second day, Acie also did the make-up of a group of my HS classmates
020 Belair Pasinaya - May 2013
The Belair Pasinaya – May 2012 – Makeup by Acie
Flores de Mayo, Makati (May 4, 2012) – Make-up of Marga

2. What did you enjoy about working with Acie? What did you like about her makeup style, as well as her work style/ethic?

Acie is very professional with me and my daughter, Marga, even if she is my first cousin. She comes on time, complete with make-up, paraphernalia, assistants, and even pegs. She takes the time to understand what it is exactly that you want by asking questions about the event you’re going to, what you will be wearing, what you want or do not want. I noticed that she also makes the effort to “size up” your personality and she takes this into consideration as well. From there, she’ll incorporate her own touch and the result is always impeccable! She is very passionate with what she does and her expression of eagerness to do your make-up (every single time!) is contagious. These are only some of the many reasons why I wouldn’t have anyone else do my make-up and my daughter’s, but Acie.

What I like most about Acie’s make-up style is that it always turns out to have that natural look, yet my face is strikingly enhanced in all the right places. For someone who doesn’t really wear make-up on an everyday basis, it makes me feel like I’m still myself. My daughter and I get compliments all the time and the make-up stays the entire duration, even if the event is from morning to evening.

3. What are some of your favorite makeup products/must-haves for daily wear?

Ironically, I don’t wear any make-up on ordinary days. I simply put on my favorite shade of red lipstick by Mac or Chanel. This is how I’ve always done it for decades. In fact, I don’t know how to apply make-up. So, on special occasions when I really need to, I call on Acie to do her magic!

Odyssey: The 18th Voyage KaKaibang Klase

I was chosen to be a speaker at my alma mater, Assumption College last week to discuss my career as a makeup artist to High School students. I was actually thrilled to be hand-picked from a roster of speakers who I found out later on were also fellow alumnae. I was informed by Mara Diego, Course Facilitator,  that it was a week-long event that exposes the students to the different avenues they can venture into  and serve as a venue for self discovery.  It gives them an opportunity to learn and explore the different skills, talents or interests that were not considered careers before.  This is where I come in.

It was a trip down memory lane as I walked through the corridors, hallways and the all too familiar excited chatter of students.  I was hoping to bump into familiar teachers and nuns, but it was a day full of endless activity and movement of people crossing each other’s paths.

The campus was definitely changing as new buildings were being added to accommodate the growing number of students and the lack of negative space as a result of this was glaringly noticeable.  Quite a shock for me and I’m looking at it from a perspective of positivity instead of nostalgia.

On to the talk.  My audience was composed of very attentive and behaved ladies.  I couldn’t believe they were hanging on to every word I said.  The highlight was actually the demo I did on Mara.  My talk revolved around the basics of makeup application and grooming to prepare them for the rigors of college life and to some, their entrance into the big world out there to look for jobs.

 Highlights of the talk

Makeup Artistry is a growing lucrative industry.  Presently it has specific areas in which one can focus their artistry on namely, Print and Editorial, Film and Theater or Stage, Weddings and Bridal and Special Effects.  Nowadays, with a growing list of makeup artist celebrities, it is an art and a skill and one has to be professionally trained and licensed to practice it.  Makeup artists gain an edge and credibility when one is trained technically.

With advancements in research and technology,  cosmetics are now combined with skincare to fit the needs of a busy woman on the go.  Cosmetics now serve as dual purpose both to give color and enhancement to the face but at the same time, it can give the skin healing and restorative benefits and delay the aging process as an added bonus.

Social Media has played a huge factor in putting cosmetics and makeup to the forefront and more accessible to the consumer.  It serves as a platform for promotion and instant gratification.  It also builds a community that serves as your audience to communicate with.

Facial Contouring is not for everyday application.  While it gives the face depth and dimension and make you look better in photos, it is not a realistic application due to the skill and time involved for the woman on the go.  Contouring is used for purposes of print media and for spacial occasions.

Eyebrow frames the face and varies from individual to individual.  As Asians, the 3 point rule will apply depending on the width of the nostril and eye shape.  Eyebrows are not symmetrically balanced but it should look similar not exact.

A smokey eye can be worn during the day provided the application and choice of color is not too dark for day.  Matte neutral shades in earth tones and in the family of plums enhance Asian tones the best.

Makeup is a continuing learning process.  One can never rest on her laurels, one should strive to be better in the next work.  Learning can be achieved by reading, apprenticing with other masters and constant practice is a must in order to keep up with the trends in the industry.    It should also be considered fun otherwise we lose the main reason why we are in the business.  Passion is what fuels the imagination.  Lastly Be humble.
