A Different kind of Coronation

Mother’s Day is an American holiday  started by  Anna Jarvis who wanted to honor her activist Mom Ann Reeves Jarvis whose advocacy was to improve the health conditions of the impoverished women in the Appalachian region in the 1800’s.

This holiday is usually celebrated on the second Sunday of May to honor all mothers for their unwavering love and sacrifice in nurturing and raising their children.

While the day was observed as a legal holiday, celebrated with simplicity and reverence—church services were held in honor of all mothers, living and dead. Fast Forward to today, Mother’s Day has become mainstream by commercializing it’s significance with greeting cards, the sending of flowers and buying gifts to honor Mothers.

Regardless of how we celebrate this day,  there is no right or wrong way on how we choose to honor and express our love to the woman that we all call Mom, a simple gesture or a heartfelt message thanking and valuing our Moms is never a bad idea.  Here is mine.

A lawyer by profession, Kat Valdez Cruz is also a college administrator of Patts College of Aeronatics.  I share with you a snippet of Kat’s parenting style, a single widowed mother raising two beautiful and accomplished daughters Annika and Alessi.

Describe your parenting style.  Does it differ from one child to another?

“I think I’ve incorporated a little bit of how my parents raised me but mostly just figuring things out along the way. I’m quite stern and rigid. I had to be since I was left to raise the girls alone. But as I aged, I think I have mellowed from being very strict to being more flexible and accepting that things don’t always turn out how you want them to. The girls raised me as well. 😊”

What advice can or did you give to your daughters that you feel they took it to heart?

“I’ve raised my daughters to be strong and independent. I’ve always told them that life will not always be a bed of roses. It will be a series of trials and challenges. You must learn to persevere and remain steadfast. When it comes to finding a partner in life, I told them to use both smarts and prayer. It is my most fervent wish – that they find someone that will perfectly complement them and be a great partner in life.”

What have you learned as a parent in raising your girls?

“When the kids were younger and I had just lost Reymond, I sought the help of a therapist. She very clearly told me – your children will have a million friends. Don’t try to be a friend to them. They don’t need that. What they need is a parent who will keep them in place. A parent who will set the rules and who will make sure they follow them. Don’t try to be a friend and think you will get along 100% of the time. Be a parent because that’s what they need most from you. I take this to heart always.”

Have your children taught you something that you appreciate or appreciated?

“My children are my constant reminder that whatever I go through in life, it will always be good because I have them by my side. They are the ones who will stand by me even if I make mistakes and wrong decisions. They teach me everyday how to love with no limits and to be a better person in the process.”

What is your beauty routine?  Any favorite products?

“When I hit 40 a few years back, I realized that beauty routines are a must! We cannot rely on youth and natural beauty anymore,   now that I am 50! I apply sunscreen before I step out the door to exercise and re-apply before I go to the office. Moisturizers are a must as age dries out my skin. I also use eye creams and serums.  Seems like a lot but again, I think it’s necessary if we want our skin to remain supple and young. Its okay to age! I am not afraid of that. I however want to age gracefully – like my Mother. 😊”

Are there beauty products you share or your girls have shared with you that you loved?

Indoor florescent lighting or blue light from the computer can contribute to melasma and skin darkening too. Aging skin can be delayed by the regular use of Sunscreen on the face.

“We are beauty junkies! I love buying makeup and accessories but I don’t really know how to use them. My children are such great teachers! They’ve taught me the importance of applying contour, bronzer, highlights and more! At the moment, my most favorite beauty product is my sunblock stick. I love how it applies so seamlessly without having to touch the product and the application is not sticky at all.”

What is your favorite photo/s from the shoot and why?

“I love all! You and Andrea made us shine! Thank you for this experience with my girls.”

10). Describe a beauty moment for you that changed the way you approach beauty or made your feel confident.

A sunscreen stick is always handy, don’t forget to reapply sunscreen during midday to protect your face from harmful UV rays.

“Ten years of doing a triathlon under the sun and extreme heat really aged my skin. I enjoyed the sport and did not realize how much it was affecting my skin. When I walked away from it, my skin changed as well. I was not as tanned which for me was a beauty mark. It’s what I believed was beautiful then. Now a few shades lighter but a few sizes bigger, (hehe) I am comfortable where my body is at. I find beauty in how I am today – older, fairer, chunkier but still keeping fit and happier.”

To all the Mothers who never cease to nurture, care, guide and love their children, a big thank you for all that you do and all that you are!  You are our Queens!

Intimate Wedding

“My Dad is here with me”

Bianca lost her father about six years ago to cancer and when  I was prepping her for hair and makeup, that s when Bianca said those 6 words.  Dad was in the form of a yellow and black butterfly hovering among the plants in the garden.

She and I almost teared up.  True enough, the yellow butterfly was hovering until I finished her getting prepped.
I said, “Bianca your dad approves of Joe.”  Right away Bianca nodded and said her dad appeared in her dream and is really happy it’s Joe for her.
Bianca and Joe met at a Coachella concert but they went on separate groups but they shared similar friends.  Based on the best man s speech that night, it was Joe that fell head over heels the moment he met her.
I ve spent a little time with the couple before their December wedding over a beach weekend and you know when they re the right fit.  From what I gathered is that they seem to have a good head on their shoulders, Bianca just finished her MA in Education and Joe has his sights on the family business.
They described their wedding plans and I must say it is so appropriate and fitting to the present times.  S I M P L E not complicated is how they want their special day to be.  They dispensed with the unnecessary frivolities when it comes to the wedding preparations.  The only difficult task was trimming the guest list since both come from big families.
Bianca the ever practical lady, said she didn’t want a big fuss and didn’t need the special treatment since she preferred to spend it on their new home and Joe has plans of taking his Masters abroad.
There are so many positive things going on for this couple and they seem to be the perfect couple.

Your Dad was right Bianca, Joe is the perfect man for you.  You chose well.

1. Please tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, passions?

2. How did you find out about me (Acie Fores Makeup Artist)? What made you want to work with me?
I’ve worked with you in the past for graduation and loved working with you.
3. How did you like the outcome of our time together, for your special day?
Before Bianca said I Do
It was perfect!! Everything was perfect from the hair to the makeup, got so many compliments about it too 🙂
4. What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love? Could you share that photo with us?

5). What was a good beauty moment for you during the wedding day itself?

I loved that I didn’t have to keep stressing over how oily I was or just stress about eyelashes falling or mascara running.

6)  Favourite beauty product, application used during your wedding and why?

I’ve been meaning to look into the Chanel Tan De Soleil and now that I know the color works for me I will definitely make that purchase when I am able to find it.

Something old is new again! Full face makeup using highlighters and contouring products

I’ve always believed in maximizing the use of your products whether its beauty products or items you have in the kitchen or cupboard.  Now that we’re in the middle of another lockdown, we are staying indoors and getting to know every nook and cranny of our homes and doing a Marie Kondo in our garages, pantries and bedrooms.

For this tutorial, I’ve discovered a lot of makeup eye palettes, highlighting, contouring and bronzing products hiding in my drawers, some of them barely used or still brand new.  I honestly don’t need new makeup.  I decided to show you how you can mix them in your daily makeup routine while creating a beautiful classy look.

Tips and Tricks

  1.  For the face, mix a teaspoon size of your favorite luminizer or highlighter, in this case, I used MAC Strobe Cream with a cream foundation like Naturactor in the shade Ochre or 152.  This method also thins out a heavier consistency of foundation.  Do not mix a luminizer with a very dewy foundation as this can look too greasy on the face.  If you mix a highlighter with a matte or Demi matte foundation the result will be satin like and not over the top.
Cream or liquid Foundations are best suited to mix your luminizer with. Choose a matte or Demi matte foundation to give you a satin glowing finish.
https://www.maccosmetics.com/esearch?form_id=perlgem_search_form&search=Strobe+cream&_TOKEN=c333194c6ab86937f123d42a053fce789866842e%2Cbebb4a96f37263f335f775962060e878264d7d4f%2C1628839243
This has a pinky silver color that’s great with mixing with your favorite foundation. Not too warm or white, this is the perfect universal color.

2). I love layering cream and liquid products with their powder versions.  This method makes your makeup last longer.  I use the contour shade as a base for my eyelid crease and nose line.  The lighter shade can also be used as a base for the eye shadow on the lid.

This is the best dupe for Tom Ford’s Contour cream palette! Addiction in shade Gold Reflection 02,  is a universal contour shade for light to medium skin tones.

This is another affordable alternative, made by Rimmel, its so portable, and easy to apply! Insta Duo Contour Stick in Dark

I know you’ve seen me use this product in most of my videos. Chanel Soleil De tan is my HG of bronzers. Not too orange, it gives the right amount of warmth to the face. Use all over the eyelid or as a transition shade on the crease to give the eyes depth.

https://www.maccosmetics.com/product/13849/30735/products/makeup/face/powder/mineralize-skinfinish
MAC Soft and Gentle is exactly what it says. Its not shimmery or frosty. Its skin like. Apply on the highpoints of the face, cheekbone, brow bone and Cupid’s bow

https://www.makeupforever.com/hk/en/face/blush/artist-face-color-refill-MI000021102.html
Makeup Forever Highlighter H106, Irridescent Champagne is my choice for eyelid color. Swipe wet to give it a foil like texture.

3). Bought the wrong shade of powder?  Too dark?  Use them as bronzers or to contour your face.  I used this underneath my cheeks and to seal the cream products, on the nose line and eyelid crease and temples to give my face some depth.

Charlotte Tillbury Airbrush Powder in shade 4, don’t throw this away! This can be used as contour colors on the temples, nose line, eye crease and under the cheeks. Use a big powder brush and blending brush to avoid harsh lines.

4). Use lipsticks as cream blush!  If you think the shade of lipstick is either too light, too dark or just the wrong shade of coral, pink or red, use it as a base for blush and reinforce it with your powder blush.  Blend the two shades together for a seamless effect.

Makeup Forever Rouge artist 24, a coral shade that is flattering to light to medium skin tones. You can also use this as a base for eye shadow when you feel like doing a neutral to natural makeup looks. Be sure to check if your product is safe to use for the eyes.

Feel Good, On the Go Makeup Video

Did you know that feeling good about yourself makes you more productive? Here’s an on-the-go, feel good  makeup look that could make each day feel a bit brighter 🥰

[My apologies for the background noise due to repairs in my home]

Everyone these days are glued to a gadget , sometimes multiple ones, to make us feel connected and entertained.  Meetings and work from Home are now conducted electronically through multiple platforms like Zoom, FB Messenger Video, Viber etc…  Digital presence has given rise to women and men (yes including men), to look their best in their meetings since you are with other members of your office team or clients and looks matter.

I’ve seen an increase in RingLight or other LED light panel usage online, including would you believe my favorite parish priest as well?   You see a round white halo in their irises to indicate that they are using good light to look good.

It may feel a bit trivial to put makeup on in these difficult times but it can help us put some semblance of routine by separating a workday from a weekend.  The idea of putting a game on face gives you a boost to start your day and make you feel better.  The ritual of putting yourself together and looking polished makes you feel centered and focused amidst these unsettling times.

So I hope I gave you a refresher and a quick makeup routine that you can incorporate in your daily life.

What are your beauty routines that you can share with me?

Behind the Veil Cranbourne David Nuptials

I’ve met Raeanna twice, once during the Bridal Trial and the second was on her wedding day.  When I went to her apartment, what greeted me was a tray of cookies just freshly baked and her mother and boys waiting to be fitted by their tailor and designer.  Introductions were immediately done and I also met her fiancee who made us feel at ease.  Raeanna immediately ushered us (my hairstylist and I)  into her room to start the trial where she made sure our comfort was being attended to.

While our communication was through SMS, I got the feeling that Raeanna had that easy going vibe, which made communication seamless.  All she wanted was to be her best version of herself without the feeling of being too made up.  She hardly wears makeup, according to her, a swipe of lipstick and sunblock is all that she can do to make her ready for the day.  I don’t blame her as this is also sometimes my 5 second makeup routine when my day is about to get overwhelming.

This was the Bridal Trial of Raeanna.

Below is how our day was spent :

1). Please tell me about yourself, what do you do for a living?  What are your hobbies, passion?

I work for a hotel and restaurant management company, working on new projects.  I like to run, I was a former triathlete and I bake.

2). How did you find out about me (Acie Fores Makeup Artist), what made you want to work with me?

You were referred to me by my friend Monica Alturra, I wanted to work with someone who came recommended by someone I know.  There are a lot of Hair and Makeup artists out there, and some of them would change the Bride beyond recognition and I didn’t want that at all.  As an “older” bride, I wanted to still look and feel my best but age appropriate.  I didn’t want to look “matronic” or a “Tita of Manila”.  I also appreciated that the Bridal trial was incorporated as an option, other HMUA didn’t.

3). How did you like the outcome of our time together for your special day?

I loved the outcome, it was exactly what I wanted to look like.  Very light and natural in the photographs.  You captured the personality of each of us, (the Maid of Honor my younger sister had a more dramatic look while my older sister had a natural look).

4) What is the one special memory you have of your wedding that you love?  Could you share that photo with us?

Love this light hearted moment, Bride Raeanna was breaking into dance as she was coming out of the bathroom to change into her gown.

Every moment was very special, to be surrounded by close family and friends.

5). What was a good beauty moment for you during the wedding day?

The entire experience of the hair and makeup was “a good beauty moment” because it was easy and effortless, no fuss.  I didn’t have to worry about anything.

6). Favourite Beauty product, application used during your wedding day.

L-R 24K Beauty Bar, Q10 Eye pads, Vichy Masque Peel and Dr. Morita Hyaluronic Essence Mask. These were used during her trial and on her wedding day.

My new Dior Palettes which fall under the warm earthy colours look good on almost everyone. They are now available at SM Makati

We loved it all!  We ended up buying the eye pads, water gel exfoliation peel, and we tried to get the same Dior lip and eye palettes.  The Vichy Face mask was the best since I have very dry skin.

7). Any Bridal Tips you want to share for future brides planning their wedding?

Get a team that you can trust preferably recommended by someone you know.  All my suppliers were tried and tested so I didn’t have to worry about whether they would be Ok or not.  Be organised, don’t leave things to the last minute.  Don’t sweat the small stuff and don’t go overboard with little details that unnecessarily cost money.  Make a realistic budget and stick to it.  After all the bills were paid, I was happy that I was less than 10K over my budget estimate!  Focus on the marriage, not just the wedding.

8). What is the one thing you could change during your wedding preparation?

I should’ve made sure that you and JM ate lunch on time!!!!  So sorry about that…

9). Any beauty rituals you did or received that you want to share?

They are the best in facials!

I did the regular facials every month leading up to the wedding.  I should’ve insisted that the groom apply sunblock while at the beach and pool before the wedding so he wouldn’t look so dark and peeling on our wedding day.

10). Favourite photo of you during the wedding and why.

Collecting her thoughts before the Bridal March.

This is one of my favourite photos, to keep the edge off, goofy photos are what make any event fun and light.

It was so hard to choose a favourite because there were so many good ones that just captured the moment.

Thank you Raeanna and family, may your new life ahead be filled with joy, happiness, love and support and moments that will bring out the best in each one of you.

Last January 18 2016, I had the chance to make up the beautiful Pia Angeles during her wedding in St. Joseph The Worker Parish, Baguio. (The reception followed at the Camp John Hay Clubhouse.) Pia comes from a family that like to cook — her mother, Lenee Recio Angeles, makes an amazing chicken relleno! Speaking of family, though: Pia’s wedding was planned and brought to life by all of her friends who had talents and businesses that they wanted to share with her.  Her giveaways were so reflective of her easy going nature: an eco friendly bag with goodies from Baguio, all lovingly put together by her friends and family.   I also love the hashtag that was chosen for that special day, #kprinmind2016 a play on their initials.   Unforgettable diba?.

As a bride, Pia is very down to earth bride no fuss not difficult at all. She gave me her full trust on how she would look on her wedding day and I was very happy I was able to deliver!

1. Please tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, passions?
I’m Pia, I was a single mom to a 6 year old boy, Andres. I work 2 jobs, mostly financial work for corporations. I handle the finances and do the budgeting and day to day accounting of funds. I enjoy both my jobs… and it still allows me to be home by 6 to spend time with my family. I enjoy cooking and baking… It is really my passion. If I’m stressed, I cook or bake something and even if I have to clean up after, I don’t get as tired as I should be. I enjoy cooking and baking with my son… I teach him a thing or two. We also enjoy doing arts and crafts together.. from DIY kiddie storages, diy chalk paint, bottles, kids toys and magnets… I love doing all these things with Andres and Kevin even if Kevin always outshines me! Ha ha!

2. How did you find out about me? What made you want to work with me?
I met Acie last 2015 during my best friend’s wedding.  Her sister, Mariella Uy learned about her from her good friend, Monse del Rosario. Mariella got Acie to do make up for Maia’s bridesmaids. I was pleasantly surprised with my make up during that date — I think by far the best I’ve had! (and I’ve been a bridesmaid a few times). Everyone complemented my make up during the wedding. My dad even said “Ay maganda ka pala!” That’s his carino to me… Hehe! But that means he was also pleasantly surprised with how pretty I was.  So the day I got engaged, I remembered Acie and thought, “Hey, I want her to do my make up for my wedding!”
image
image
3. How did you like the outcome of our time together, for your special day?

I enjoyed our sessions and I think both my mom and sister also did. Acie and her team were on schedule and professional.  It was also a very light session: no one was panicking, no one was rushing (or so I think! Haha!). Acie and JayMar really knew how to work with photographers and videographers. It was easy. I had such a good time.
image image image
4. What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love? Could you share that photo with us?

One special memory I had during the wedding was my wedding march… Seeing my son waiting for me… made me nervous but excited… seeing my parents made me more excited too…. and to see all my gue

sts smiling.. I felt so much love and warmth from everyone! Finally… seeing my fiance — I couldn’t stop smiling! Everything just felt right, everything felt magical.

Korean Makeup 101 Banila Co is here!

Running late from an earlier appointment, I barely made it to the opening of their store pop up in Glorietta 4,  I was pointed to Vanilla Cupcakes when I asked the security guard where Banila Co was located.   That made my day.    As I arrived, I was pointed to Mr. Jon Lim, the one responsible in bringing in this line.  They were about to begin their makeup demo with Senior Korea makeup artist for Banila, Mr. Kim Kangpil who has a show Get Beauty in Korea.

Clean it Zero feels like an oil makeup remover in paste form and without the oily residue.  It has a moisturizing effect that leaves you squeeky clean.  It has a fruity smell that dissipates after but does not linger on you.  I think this is purposely done to appeal to a younger crowd.  I like the smell and it does not bother me.  It’s perfect for travelling since it comes in a tub with a spatula, making it very travel friendly and portable.

Science behind the brand

With the Filipino’s fascination with Korean Telenovelas, its not hard to understand our warm reception to this Korean Skin care brand.  It was explained and demonstrated by Mr. Kim Kangpil that Korean women approach beauty from the underlying root of “proper skincare”.   Korean women do not want to show that they have makeup on, The Korean glow comes from having perfect skin, of having the perfect makeup base.

A primer on how to achieve glowing skin
A primer on how to achieve glowing skin

When I heard this, I was jumping on my seat.  Finally!  I wanted to high five Mr. Kangpil on this one.    Most of us think that having that perfect glow comes from all the highlighting products we pile on our face but to achieve perfect skin is really all about layering your skincare and applying your base on top of that.

Here is how to achieve that glow:

  1.  After cleansing your face, apply a brightening toner to cover our yellow undertones.  This also locks in moisture needed to prep the face for the base.

Judith August Camouflage Cosmetics Review

Judith August was introduced to my beauty world through a Hollywood makeup artist Kim Greene.  She partners with a fellow Hollywood makeup artist named Melissa Street and they have a YouTube channel called Greene Street beauty where they dish out tips and tricks when working on a film and TV set.  This was her concealer of choice when working, in fact, on her blog post, a book called Gotcha Covered by Judith August was in their must reads.  I was intrigued and I ordered mine through Amazon.

Everything you need to know about concealing is in this book.

Judith August the woman behind the veil so to speak.
A model in the 60’s turned makeup artist who wanted to conquer her eyebag problem. She sought to make her own line that would camouflage her imperfections.

Fast forward 3 years later, which was late July of this year, I found her products literally at my fingertips when I visited Naimies, a Los Angeles cosmetic supply store that carries everything and anything your heart desires in the world of beauty. A store dedicated to the film industry, it is makeup grocery heaven.

A yellow corrector was applied to the bruise followed by a damp green sponge to pat the 3 colors was used. Brushes were utilized to feather and blend out the edges. A yellow toned powder by MUD in Buttermilk was used to seal the concealer.

A little goes a long way in using these products. Consistency is very dense, so application is best suited to a patting, rolling and stippling motion for the product to melt in.  I used a sponge or my favorite tool, my fingers to set it in.  The Killer Cover contains Castor oil, which helps in its waterproof and water resistant properties.  I didn’t use the black sponge that went with it since the sponge nearest me at that time was a Makeup Forever one and I think it also did a good job.

I used the Killer Cover on the lady below to test it out and I found out that when I sheered it down a bit, it can also be used as a foundation. A wheel of its own.

Below is a before and after shot of this sweet lady who I pulled into my home while walking in my neighborhood, and I chose her specifically for this demo.  Pardon the light and angle in the photos since the light was shifting while I was doing her face.  This was taken around late afternoon.

After, while her acne is still raised, The Killer Cover hid the redness and brown spots. I used a green corrector for her pimples and acne and a peach corrector for the brown spots prior to the application. I combined all 5 colors from the Killer Cover.

Charlotte Tilbury: Its really all about the Glow

When I’m obsessed with something, I go on a hunt until I have it.  I’ve been following Charlotte Tilbury for quite some time ever since she made a video collaboration with Lisa Eldridge, another makeup idol of mine.  Charlotte Tilbury has been in the makeup business for the past 20 years and has worked with many famous photographers like Mario Testino, Terry Richardson and has collaborated with many international makeup brands like MAC Cosmetics and has painted the faces of well heeled personalities like Penelope Cruz, Sienna Miller, Cara De Levigne and Kate Moss and she did the makeup of Amal Clooney.  Growing up in Ibiza Spain surrounded by a creative family, she was surrounded and shaped by the colors and scenes of that area.

I finally got to visit her flagship store in The Grove in LA.    Her concept for her line and freestanding store is a throwback to the 30’s and 40’s era where silver screen sirens encapsulated the essence and glamour of the times.  The Art Deco feeling in her packaging is so evident in her belief that it was a golden age for mysterious and glamorous women.

CTilburymagic-cream
Charlottes Magic Cream that evokes memories of our grandmothers cream potions. This is the bomb!

This Cream is composed of peptides that stimulate skin collagen, Hyaluronic boosters that plump the skin, Vitamin E and rosehip oil to revive the skin’s appearance.  It’s antiaging, and has an SPF of 15, all good stuff to restore your skin to youth levels.  She has put skincare in the forefront of her product line as she is a firm believer in having good skin before any makeup application.

I wasnt able to get a hold of her cream since I have so many jars of moisturizers that I need to use and finish and I wanted to put this on hold.  However I was able to get a sample and I used it during the summer.  It is very creamy, emollient and hydrating.  I was a bit hesitant to use this on my normal to combination skin as I didn’t want to have anything heavy on my face.  What it does is, when applied before makeup application, one gets the dewy and JLo glow.  Not bad but in our weather, it may give you a slightly greasy feeling during the course of the day.  I would use this in the cooler months when our skin will not create excess sebum.

It is a great moisturizer for those with dry skin as it instantaneously transforms your parched skin into an oasis of moisture.  It has a slight odd smell but disappears and does not really bother me at all.

Charlotte Tilbury products are on the pricey side but if you want to spoil yourself, it’s worth it.  Locally her products are available at the MUP store.  You may follow Charlotte Tilbury in FB, YouTube and Instagram for her videos and products.

Behind the Kit with Marissa Narvaez

I met my good friend, Marissa Narvaez when I lived in Baguio in 2009 and we both share the same interests and passion which is makeup and more makeup.  Admitedly, she began to feed this growing need for a more disciplined approach when she enrolled in the Center for the Aesthetic Studies with Jen Delica on a one on one basis and Airbrush makeup with Georginna Desuasido. From there, she saw a demand for makeup artists in the north and her passion turned into a growing craft where she can impound on the importance of beauty in the self esteem of a woman. We both reciprocate and feed our artistry whenever an opportunity arises for an extra pair of magical hands.

Up Close and Sensational

She is currently an entrepreneur in her own right as she and her husband are engaged in the pursuit of wellness and pampering, they own Kuwentong Barbero located in SM, a Manila franchise of Nuat Thai Massage along Marcos Highway and a Spa called Mari Spa on Abanao st.  She definitely has cornered her  own market.  She also conducts Personal Beauty workshops to young women in need of beauty enhancement.  Here is a glimpse of a woman who lives and breathes beauty.

Q & A:

  1. What inspired you to get into makeup and did you immediately know that’s what you wanted to do?

My mom and my older sister were my inspiration. Since I was a kid, I’ve seen them glammed up and would always play with my mom’s make-up stash. My sister was a professional model in her early years and I was just in awe seeing her putting on make-up. My penchant for using make up started when I was young.

My first job was working for a 5-star chain hotel and I was required to be made-up at all times! It was not a task for me as I was having fun and in fact, I enjoyed helping out my work colleagues with their make-up application.

When I moved to Baguio, I thought of doing professional make-up but I didn’t get to practice until 2008. Yes, I knew immediately that’s what I wanted to do.

  1. Where did you train or are you self-taught?

Since I was based in Baguio and I was working fulltime, I couldn’t take the long courses offered at CAS back in 2008. I took the one-on-one session with Ms. Jen Delica and took me 3 days to learn everything! That was my first formal make- up training session. I took short courses at Maquiallage Professionel, Make-up Designory and Shu Uemura the following years.

  1. Where do you find inspiration?

Mostly from my make up books, magazines, works of my favorite make up artists and Pinterest!

  1. What’s the best advise a fellow professional has ever given you?

Never stop practicing.

  1. How do you think your work has evolved since you first began working professionally?

The make-up industry is like the medical field. There is always new technology invented. You need to be abreast in learning new techniques. I aim to constantly learn from my mentors by attending their workshops and training sessions. My passion for learning was the key element.

  1. Which one product do you wish you could have or create, to make your life easier?

I wish to have TML The Makeup Light right now. I hope Santa will read this…

  1. One product you never leave home without for yourself or your kit?

Lipbalm!

image

  1. How do you find time to relax?

I have a massage at Mari Spa (Shameless plug here!)

  1. You conduct personal beauty workshops, how did that come about?

My friends convinced me to teach basic make up application and no one in Baguio has done it yet. What is common here are sponsored workshops or training sessions by network marketing companies.

  1. How would you describe your work?

Brides are my favorite. They always have that radiant glow on their big day no matter how stressed they are. With my techniques, my goal is always to bring out their natural beauty.

  1. Describe yourself in one word

Trailblazer.

Coverderm The Perfect Camouflage

Anyone posting a selfie is fair game for anyone on social media more so, if you are a celebrity or someone famous. Consider the Instagram photos of Miley Cyrus’ dyed armpit hair or Kim Kardashian’s famous gleaming booty that resembles a Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut, is proof that a face or a body part is now a typical form of self expression.  Haters and bashers went to town with those ones.

I’m not going to do a self righteous rant but rather share with you how those with skin issues and afraid to post their selfies can be a thing of the past.

Previously, camouflage makeup was relegated to the medical sphere and not readily available, since various skin diseases or imperfections like birthmarks, acne, rosacea, psoriasis, burns, moles, couperose, vitiligo, age and sun spots, pigmentation, freckles and facial redness are considered skin diseases or conditions that needed medical assistance.  Now,  skincare and cosmetics are intrinsically connected via advances in research and technology that most cosmetics contain healing, restorative and medical benefits which make it accesible to the consumer.   Coverderm, formerly Covermark before, was recently launched in Manila by Brady Pharma, its local distributor for everyone to obtain.

Ultimate skin corrector making skin remain unnoticed.

It was developed by Lydia O Leary, an American chemist who had a birthmark on her face that she wanted to conceal.  She wanted to develop a product that had coverage but was light on the face and easy to apply.  Her goal was to rid skin imperfections and make ordinary people lead normal lives through makeup, as explained by Rome Maglalang, sales account executive.

What can it do?

Coverderm Makeup Line

Final thoughts on Coverderm.

It’s consistency is really smooth, creamy and lightweight.  It does cover skin imperfections really well without the feeling of heaviness.  I would compare this to  the Kryolan Cream Camouflage and will use this as a concealer if not as a foundation too. Product comes with a spatula, its best to warm it at the back of your hand apply with a concealer or foundation brush, or damp sponge.   The packaging of the foundation can be improved by coming out in tubes like their leg makeup counterpart, instead of a jar for portability and convenience.  For artists, a palette with global tones can come in handy.   However, I would still consider getting  this for my kit.

Photoshop just met its match.

Antonio – Rodriguez Nuptials

I love my job.  Weddings are usually that particular time where emotions of happiness, joy and sadness come into play.  I was touched when my friend Rachelle Almario called me to ask if I was available on February 11 to do the hair and makeup of her best friend Lisa Antonio.  It was her wedding gift to them.  This is the stuff I live for.

IMG_7694
BFF. Warms my heart.

Lisa and I share 2 things in common, Rachelle is also one of my good friends and that we both just moved into the Alabang area recently, having our homes built within the same year in 2014.    Lisa is an architect, she carries the lineage of the late National Artist Ramon Antonio and her famous aunts the Veloso sisters who are well known for their made to order clothes for Manila’s chic society.  Her well appointed home with clean and  crisp lines give you an indication of her choice in wedding style.  The epitome of chic and sophistication echo the simplicity of her gown bought from Rosa Clara.

Calm and Relaxed.

Lisa conveyed her wishes to me by making her hair and makeup very simple, nothing too contrived just effortless.  She looked to Audrey Hepburn and Carolina Herrera as her inspiration and immediately I knew what direction she wanted.
