NARS + Albert Kurniawan Makeup Workshop

There he was, a vision of eye candy if you will.  He began the session by apologising.  He apologised for his lack of command of the English and Tagalog languages, he was, after all, Indonesian.

He warmed my heart.  Sigh…., even if he spoke in Hebrew or Russian, it didn’t matter at all, standing a few feet from me was the man of the hour, Albert Kurniawan, NARS Philippines Chief Makeup Artist.  His talent and work are legendary. Indonesian influence is not a bad thing.  He grew up watching his mother apply makeup and he carried with him an image of a very put together woman who never left the house without her eyes done.

He is the celebrity makeup artist in demand from the likes of Heart Evangelista,  Megan Young, Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, the Bb. Pilipinas Pageant candidates, Georginna Wilson, Toni Gonzaga to name a few — and the list is endless.  He is probably on their speed dial.

What celebrity or model or bride has his hands not touched yet?  Obviously mine.  I still have to wait for a very red carpet event if I want to be under his beauty spell.  I can just hope that one day our paths will cross whether that is on a professional or social  level.

NARS Philosophy

The place was packed when I arrived and I should’ve left earlier so I could get a good seat.  Sensing it was going to be a well attended workshop, I opted to  stand on the side to get a better view of the demo.  While waiting for a colleague, Pia Reyes, I took a quick look at the NARS boutique to check out their items.

At the heart of the cosmetic line lies the chic modern luxurious simplicity of its look.  Yes simple and luxurious, a contradiction in itself.  Francois Nars the creator of his own brand believes that “There are no rules when it comes to beauty. He says, “Whatever makes you look and feel good is right.”   It’s unmistakable appeal lies in its ability to make the consumer feel like its a guilty caprice, part of a wardrobe staple or a coveted accessory that makes it part of a lifestyle  or simply a state of mind.

Packaging designed by Fabien Baron, reflects Francois Nars’s love of form and function with its black soft casing with his name emblazoned in white.  Fashion and Classic Colors are outrageously pigmented  because it is designed to make the woman express herself creatively and imbibe her own style. Credit belongs to him with the introduction of The Multiple, the original 3-1 multi functional stick that can be applied to the eyes, cheeks and lips, and who can forget the iconic universal blush Orgasm and its spinoffs?  Turkish Delight Lipgloss as famously worn by Kim Kardashian?

NARSkin

Albert Kurniawan hit the nail on the head when he began stressing the importance of having good skin as a key essential in having makeup look and feel good on the face.  He moisturised the model’s face with the Nars moisturiser and the star of the skincare line is the NARS brightening serum that brightens the skin and dulls the imperfections on the face.  Second to that was the application of the primer as a key element in the longevity of the makeup.  Their skin line prides itself with the use of prime ingredients that are plant derived and maximising its benefits in giving our skin the utmost  nourishment.

With the advent of wholistic living, NARS believes that what we put in our bodies like water, nutrients, antioxidants and supplements should mirror the good things we put in our skin .  What he offers is a condensed skincare line that will cleanse, hydrate, protect, refresh and revitalise in order to keep it  in its tip top shape.  Having good skin is the perfect beauty compliment any woman can have.

Secrets from the Master

  • Put eye drops first on the eyes to brighten the whites of the eyes and clean out any debris.  Eyes look bigger and refreshed.
  • Feel the skin.  Touch the face to see if the face is properly moisturised and prepped for makeup.  It should feel slightly tacky.  You may apply a light application of BB cream prior to the foundation application.
  • Powder the skin lightly after moisturing.  This will give a satin finish to the skin, a perfect canvas for the foundation application.  This step is a no-no in the makeup school, as  we were taught the golden rule that creams over creams and powder after powder.  The logic behind this is the caking of the skin when you begin your makeup.  Albert explained that this step is a foolproof way of making the makeup last longer.  I did try it on myself and it does feel like satin when I applied my foundation after.  Makeup Myth no. 1 debunked.
  • Apply foundation with your hands and not a brush.  Aside from leaving streaks, the warmth of your hands will activate the ingredients of the foundation making the skin look dewy and well, like second skin.  Most NARS liquid and cream products are best applied with the hands as heat activation causes the ingredients in the product to fully sink in the skin.
  • After the application of the foundation, contour the face using the number 3 motion.  Begin at the side of the temple, the hollow of the cheek and ending at the jaw line.  He says never to be afraid if you apply blush more than the usual, from the apples of the cheek just on top of the hollow of the cheek and do not go past the ear.  Blush will disappear quickly once you’ve finished with the makeup.  Apply a highlighter on the high points of the face as a last step.
  • Line the lower lash line with a light green pencil instead of the white or beige colour.  The reason is because in basic colour theory, green counteracts redness and neutralises it.    Genius!!  All along I’ve been applying the beige liner on the waterline to conceal redness.    I really learned something new again.  Another Makeup trick learned.
  • When you apply mascara to the lashes, begin by applying a volumizing formula first.  Wait for it to dry and then apply a waterproof one when you have applied your false lashes.  This guarantees your lashes will be immune to tears and sweat.  I shed a tear as I write this.  Tee hee hee hee
  • Use an eyebrow pencil first to frame the eyebrows.  Brush upwards to soften the harsh edges.  Fill brows with powder.  Whatever is left on the brush, use it at the front of the brow so as not to appear surprised, dense and dark.  Use  a brow gel to tame the brows and apply a highlighter underneath the brow to give it a finished look.
  • Essential products to have are the Multiple stick, mascara, Tinted moisturiser, lipstick, blush and loose powder.  Essential brushes to have are the blush/powder brush, brow brush, a dense eye shadow brush and a blending brush and lip brush.  Concealers are meant to be applied with the fingers hence, no concealer brush.
  • You may pair a bold lip with a bold eye.  Look for balance.

My Takeaways

Aside from the complimentary photos, sample sachets of the primer and serum,  I took away from this workshop a validation of sorts that makeup  should be simple enough but  also fun.   Real and sexy are a state of mind.  Simplicity and luxurious can coexist.

Albert’s seminars are still ongoing,  from 5:30-7:00 pm,  June 20 at the Rustans Alabang Town Center and at Edsa Shangrila on the 27th.  Be early, seats can get taken quickly.

SkinLux is Deluxe…. Aaaahhhh at last

The past few weeks have put me in overdrive and stress mode with domestic demands of motherhood coupled with the overseeing of the final phase of the construction of our new home .  When Martine De Luna, my friend, told me about a skin pampering morning  experience at a new skin aesthetic center called SKINLUX some weeks back,  I immediately jumped into her invitation.  I really needed one! And oh, my birthday was just the day before so this is a welcome gift so to speak.

Nelly, Who?

Owner Beena Go opened SkinLux Aesthetic and Laser Center when she found a remedy that successfully treated sensitive skin, pigmentation,  and a host of skin problems related to ageing. She claimed the best facial she experienced was in Singapore where she is based.  The facility used Nelly Devuyst products from Belgium which is considered an exclusive skincare line of products that were used by European royalty using the best organic ingredients.  How’s that for pedigree?  Ingredients target specific cell membranes and in turn, obtain measurable results, restoring the skin from the inside out.  It is all natural and organic so very safe and formulated to treat sensitive skin.

Armed with the knowledge and assurance of the compatibility of the line, Miss Go together with her friend, Dr. Anna Nolido opened the centre in Manila whose objective is to provide quality facials combined with the latest in laser technology while catering to the specific needs of the skin type.  The centre also has  other body services as well.  The staff are pleasant, courteous and Singapore trained so expect quality and professional service once you step in.

Plush and Lush

Interiors and Rooms are not that clinical or medical looking,  in fact they were so plush, that this is the first dermatology clinic I’ve been to that uses Down Comforter instead of the single bed sheet to keep you warm.  I felt so indulged and pampered already.

SkinLux Signature Facial ++++

I was led immediately to the facial room to begin my treatment.  The derma prescribed the signature facial prior to the next procedure that is considered their selling treatment.  Revlite.  I’m not one to gush and ooh and ahh over a facial because I thought they were all the same.  I was mistaken.  The experience was like no other because it included a foot massage, too!  I asked the therapist if this was a standard service in addition to the facial and she replied a foot massage was really included in the signature facial.  This is the +++!  My ear to ear grin melted into a quick slumber and I truly was sold on this!  Book me for the next one, stat!

Revlite Plus

During the initial consult with the in-house derma, she assessed my skin and she said that my skin texture is great, she concurred that I do have a few patches of dark pigmentation developing in some areas.  Blame it on bad habits in the past, she said that Revlite Plus is the perfect treatment to address this problem.  It is a treatment specifically geared towards the lightening and removal of tattoos and dark pigmentation on the face and body.  Revlite Plus uses laser and IPL photofacial skin rejuvenation that uses short bursts of light that is absorbed by the skin pigments and blood in the vessels.    Added bonus is a skin tightening effect, reduces acne and improves skin resurfacing.  Is this the holy grail I’ve been looking  for in making my dark spots go away for good?

I admit, I got cold feet when the derma asked me if I wanted to lower the setting.  It felt like a rubber band slapped on your face.  Pain was bearable on a scale of 5, 10 being the highest.  Maybe I was just too sensitive that day so I asked her to lower the setting to a more tolerable level.  It was over in 5 minutes.    That was it, quick, easy and my face was not sore at all.  I was advised to not use any topical creams for the next 3 days but I could wash my face with cold water after a few hours.  Not bad for a first timer.

Mother’s Day Beauty Session 2: Jeanette Chu Gomez

I first met Jeannette in July of 2013, when our family friend Mike Gomez quietly announced to close friends family and relatives that he was engaged to be married. I have known Mike for more than two decades and I have never seen him or heard he was in a relationship with anyone for that matter.

To whom I asked?  I checked out his Facebook page and there she was.  Her photo splashed as his FB profile pic. I thought to myself, it was a photo of a lovely woman randomly selected because of her attractive profile. I’ve seen this in a couple of my friend’s profile photos where random photos of people, a cause, places or things that appeal to the person is used as a FB profile photo.

I was immediately informed that the lovely woman is indeed his fiancé.  We both laughed ourselves silly. So I asked him for how long did he keep this as a secret to everyone?  12 years to be exact.  Huwow!  Indeed it was time to settle down.  Jeannete comes from a family of eight siblings.  They met at the Stock Exchange when Mike was working as a stock broker and she from another firm.  It was love at first sight for him.  As the saying goes, the rest is His-story.

Unfortunately, the wedding coincided with my family vacation (which was also overdue) and, so I could not attend.  I vowed to make it up to them as I was kicking myself in the head for failing to witness this wonderful, humble couple mark their milestone.  As the photos were posted on Facebook, I truly saw the love between the two and I missed a fabulous wedding.

When I finally got a chance to meet Jeannete in her mother in law’s birthday celebration, I boldly asked her if she could model for me some time for my bridal portfolio when the need arises.  She was hesitant and too shy to say yes. Fast forward to May of this year, I finally got a chance to ask her once more if she can model for my Mother’s Day feature on my blog and she said yes.

The good news is, there is a bun in the oven and she is due on May 19th! In fact as I write this, she will be in labor soon.  I can only wish Mike and Jeannete good things and blessings, and parenthood will certainly be the icing on the proverbial cake.

Congratulations and welcome to Parenthood, Jeanete.  Family photo session next?

The Heat is On!

I don’t know about you ladies, but when the temperature goes up and I mean past boiling point, I really don’t want to put anything else on my face except an ice pack.  My summer must haves are my go to’s when I need to put something on to look put together or at least presentable.  I narrowed it down to 8 items  and  I swear by each of their claim in beating the heat or just because it’s simply perfect for the hot season.

La Roche Posay Effaclar Mat

La Roche Posay Effaclar mat
Moisturizer to combat oily areas of the face

Available only to the trade, click here where to order them.  This is considered a drugstore brand but you may purchase these in HK or Singapore.  Like it says it controls the oiliness in the areas that show an oil slick specially o the T zone area and extends the wear of your makeup for another 2-3 hours.  Perfect for brides or those that have oily-combination skin.  It’s quickly absorbed and your face is perfectly prepped for makeup.  Dries to a satin finish.

Makeup Forever Face and Body Foundation

MUFE Face and Body
Lightweight Consistency and transfer proof

I’m not kidding when I say this foundation is literally a breath of fresh air in your face.  When applied, it feels very cool on the face because of its gel like consistency and the first ingredient in this foundation is water.  Unlike other foundations that have hard to pronounce names as the first ingredient in their list, this is a winner for me.  Coverage is light to medium and is build able.  I wear shade 32 or 34.

NARS Laguna Bronzer

NARS Laguna
NARS Laguna Bronzer

I really like this bronzer because it doesn’t make you look orangy.  It has the perfect brown, gray with tiny flecks of gold in it.  You look sculpted without the look of oompa loompa on your face.  You can also use this as an eye crease colour to give it depth and warmth.

NARS Bronzing Oil

NARS Bronzing Oil
Look tanned and bronzed without having to look like an Oscar statue

Love the smell and warmth it gives your skin.  The only con on this product is its packaging.  A bit messy to apply on your body because it doesn’t have a pump to dispense, you have to pour it on your hands.  This bottle is on the pricey side but I once saw a fashion stylist rub this in the centre of the legs of the model and her legs looked like a million bucks.  Has a faint coconut scent not overpowering but if you like the smell of buko it’ s tolerable.

MAC SkinLight Finish in Superb

MAC Superb Skin Finish
Used to cheat perfect glowing skin

This product was introduced to me by another makeup artist friend.  She uses this on the high points of the cheek or as a highlighter on the centre of the eyelid and brow bone.  When the light hits your face, perfect glowing skin is achieved.  This is what gives you the JLo sheen.

Maybelline 24 Hr. Color Tattoo

Maybelline Color Tattoo
Creaseless and long wearing

I have a weakness and fondness for eye cream shadows mainly because of its effortless application.  This is a drugstore delight.  it really doesn’t budge.  Just add an eyeliner and you’re good to go.  Instant semi smoky look appropriate for the season.  Comes in jewel tones too.  Love the Tenacious Teal colour if you’re feeling adventurous.

NARS Turkish Delight Lip Gloss

NARS Turkish Delight
Turkish delight

Not only is this Kim Kardashian’s favourite lip gloss on top of the MAC Angel lipstick, it is truly a universal lip gloss that can be worn by anyone.  It adds a very subtle oomph to your lips even when worn bare.  Personally I prefer to wear lip stains or lip glosses during the summer, lipstick feels heavy.

Essie in Geranium

Essie Geranium
Geranium Pandemonium

Essie nail polish is one of my personal favourites because of its colour variety and longevity.  I first saw this colour applied in Nail Spa Makati many months ago on a client and I love the pop of colour.  Its such a happy colour, your toes and nails look like they’re having so much fun.

It’s Personal, it’s business

In this competitive business of beauty, what sets you apart from the rest of the other artists?  This goes without saying that first and foremost is the skill and talent you possess, and this industry is not lacking in that department.  Aside from the budget and price consideration of the client, I find that going the extra mile to make them happy is the key in adding value to the service you provide.  Let me share with you  what works for me.

Communication

Most of my inquiries are coursed through text messages,  my website contact bar or through email.  While SMS messages and email correspondences are quicker, I still find that returning their call is still the best way to effectively communicate with the client or bride.  Speaking to them gives them an idea of how you come across to them by your tone or manner in which you speak to them.  Sending SMS or email messages lose the emotion and can sometimes be misconstrued and can be a potential disaster in securing the booking.    It is also your chance to discuss the terms of the deal and offer something that will spell you’re hired.  Not everything is written in stone.  I have had to accommodate clients whose budgets are lower than the rates I quoted.  It’s up to you to decide if the booking will outweigh its weight in gold.

Make the call
Make the call

Reward the Award

It is rewarding when you hear you’ve got the client/booking or shoot.  Since it is our service that we are promoting, it’s up to you how you want to reward your client.  In my case, for brides or individual clients, aside from making them look beautiful, I usually give a token that they can use in their event.  It just sends a positive vibe that you care and more often than not, it is much appreciated and they always look pleasantly surprised.  For shoots and editorial work, it would be nice to send the editor or the people responsible for booking you, a nice thank you note indicating how much you’ve enjoyed the experience and that if there is anything that they need you to think of you for the next shoot.  Remember gratefulness and kindness sets the deal for you.

Be Updated

As I mentioned in my previous blog about what I learned as a makeup artist, Keeping up with the trends and updating your knowledge and skills will always put you in an advantage.  If budget is a concern, you may still keep up with the trends by looking up new methods or application through magazines, seminars and researching thorough the internet can still put you one step up in the business.  Know what you’re offering and learn to use it to your advantage so you can make them come back to you.

Sunscreen vs. Sunblock (What you should know)

Sunblock vs Sunscreen?

What is the difference between the 2?

Now in my mid 40’s, I’ve taken to apply sunblock on my face due to previous sins committed in the past when I lay baking in the sun for hours with tanning oil as protection.  I used to tan with Coke and Baby oil slathered together on my face and body just to get that golden look.  Remember those days?

Well, 2 decades later, it’s payback time with the appearance of dark pigmentations on my left temple and cheeks and moles and freckles under my eye area.   I haven’t gotten the nerve to use laser  treatments yet as I have been trying medical grade creams like hydroquinone to lighten them. Unfortunately, I have decided to take charge of the condition of my skin only lately  with the hope of delaying the ageing process.

Remember this Ad? Orange and Brown were the colours to aspire for
Remember this Ad? Orange and Brown were the colours to aspire for

Here’s the lowdown.

Sunscreen vs. Sunblock

Sunscreens are products combining several ingredients that help prevent the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. Two types of ultraviolet radiation, UVA and UVB, damage the skin, age it prematurely, and increase your risk of skin cancer.  UVB is the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging (photoaging). They also exacerbate the carcinogenic effects of UVB rays, and increasingly are being seen as a cause of skin cancer on their own. Sunscreens vary in their ability to protect against UVA and UVB (Source)

la-roche-posay-anthelios-mineral-ultra-light-sunscreen-fluid-spf-50

Thick creamy lotions are known as sunblocks. These contain minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that physically create a barrier against both the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Sunblock is usually white, thicker and remains visible after you put it on. Sunblock is best used for anyone planning to spend hours in the sun at a time, like sports activities. Most of us don’t like the idea of being covered head to toe in what looks like white gunk, and choose sunscreen, regardless. It’s not pretty, but those are the facts. (Source)

neutrogenaultrasheerdrytouchsunblockSPF30

Personally, I now use Sunblock even on my face despite the heavier consistency and blend away.  This is what I use on a daily basis due to the dark pigmentation on some areas on my face.

Innobloc

What type of sun protection should you use?

It really depends on how much sun exposure you’re getting on a daily basis.  According to my dermatologist, she said that sunscreen is enough to wear on a daily basis, while if you are going to be outdoors on a longer basis, sunblock will be the wiser choice to use due to the prolonged stay under the sun.

How much should I use?

For the face,  a teaspoon full will suffice while for the body about a shot glass full or 1 oz. if you are planning to stay for a longer period of time outdoors and reapply after 2 hours.  Apply on exposed parts of the face and body 30 minutes prior to sun exposure so ingredients will be fully absorbed on the skin.

Amount you need to apply sunblock to the body.
Amount you need to apply sunblock to the body.

Amount to use on your face. Believe me this is enough.
Amount to use on your face. Believe me this is enough.

What is SPF?

It simply means “Sun Protection Factor”.  For example, if your unprotected skin turns red after 20 minutes under the sun, a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 means you can be exposed to the sun 15 x longer or about 2.5 hours without turning red.  It is a measure of one’s sun exposure using the product versus one going out with bare skin.  I think one is safer to use protection that has an SPF of 30 which according to studies blocks out 97% of the harmful rays while that of an SPF with 45 blocks out 98% of the harmful rays.  This also goes without saying that depending on where you live, the strength of the sun’s rays and time of day you are exposed, it is imperative that you choose your sunblock protection appropriate to these conditions.  (Source:)

What about a higher SPF like 50 or 75?

It really is a marketing ploy more than anything according to the FDA.  A higher SPF does not increase your sun protection.  Unfortunately, we buy the highest SPF possible thinking that we we are protected for a long period of time and we end up not re-applying.  A lower SPF is still the best option to use which can offer the same protection.

What are the effects of SPF in Moisturizer or Makeup?

A 2001 study at Wake Forest University showed that, within two hours, liquid and cream foundations often slide around and gather in pores and wrinkles. After just a few hours in normal temperature and humidity conditions, the SPF you get from makeup can be considered  ineffective by the way foundation wears off. (Source:)

Here’s my take on maximum protection strategy.

1)  Cleanse the face, next apply a moisturiser with an SPF of 15.  Good ones to try are Neutrogena and Olay which are easily absorbed by the skin.  Choose that are labeled broad spectrum sun protection like Parsol 1789 and Mexoryl.  You may use your favourite BB or CC cream and stop here or if you want a medium coverage, proceed to step 2.  I use Lorea’l Garnier BB cream on occasions I don’t want full coverage.  Judy of itsjudytime does a good review on this which got me sold on Garnier more than Maybelline.

My BB cream of choice. Not too white or chalky.
My BB cream of choice. Light-Medium is my shade.  Not too white or chalky.

2)  Once absorbed,  apply your foundation with an SPF of at least 15.  Apply powder.  While powder does not have an SPF, it contains zinc oxide a mineral that that acts as a barrier to sun damage.  Nice product to try is Bare Mineral powder foundation.

3)  If you are allergic to Parsol or Mexoryl, you may use a stronger sunblock one with titanium dioxide as they are not absorbed by the skin, they sit on the surface of the face and reflect sun damage away due to their thick consistency.  One caveat is that  a whitish cast on your face is seen when you are photographed with flash.  I choose  sunscreen instead if I need sun protection.

Even Jessica Alba is not spared with the white glow
Even Jessica Alba is not spared with the white glow

If these steps are too much for you, opt for a powder foundation with SPF instead.  Remember that in order to maximize sun protection,  make sure you use a sunscreen option, whether it’s a moisturizer, makeup, powder, or all three.

Loving your Craft (Lessons I learned as a makeup artist)

Serendipity had occurred to me in so many instances of my life and professionally speaking, a lot of good things happen by chance when you least expect it.  I have been fortunate so far with my work but then again I look forward to more good things.  I would like to share with you some of  the lessons I’ve come across in my profession.   This is by no means in any order.  Loving your craft is a metaphor for life that we should always strive to be the best that we can be no matter what the circumstances are.

1)  Practice Practice Practice

In all the Cosmetic and Makeup schools that I’ve studied in, one thing cannot be stressed enough is the mantra of Practice, Practice, Practice.  Primary lesson is the mastery of technique which one should master by heart and I mean skills like concealing, skin prep, color correcting, foundation matching, proper sanitation and highlighting an contouring.

When you think you have mastered it, you need to practice some more.

I have asked my teacher Jen Delica if she sometimes experiences wrong foundation matching on a client and she admitted that yes on a few occasions she admitted to this.  Nevertheless, being the pro that she is, she immediately spots the error and corrects it immediately.  Nice to know even the pros make mistakes sometimes.  Only if  you have mastered these techniques, then you can move to the creativity aspect of it.  This is the foundation of a successful makeup career.

2)  Get Proactive

I don’t get booked every single day.  I wish my calendar was as full as the seasoned artists are but truth to tell, I also enjoy my downtime being with my family and friends and basically enjoying the other aspects of being a mother, wife and all that stuff.  This also gets my creative juice flowing because sometimes you need to unwind to recharge and get inspired with your work and this puts a different perspective in your work.  I get up everyday and work on my career by working on my social media presence, writing blogs, testing new products, trying out new techniques,  networking just to get my name out there and improve my resume.  This industry is so dynamic you really have to keep up or you stagnate.

My other teacher, Georginna Desuasido mentioned that when she was beginning her career 10-15 years ago, she actively marketed herself by sending out her portfolio and CD to many magazines, editorials, film directors just to get her name out there and hope for the best that even 1 might give her a call.  Not one called and she felt devastated.  Fast forward, she really did get a call soon and the rest is beauty and glamour history for her.  I genuinely asked her if I was in the right career path amidst this sea of makeup artist shrooming way past me.  She said that in this business, patience is really a virtue and that one has to carve her niche and really commit to it.

You can’t be a success overnight.  Even if you are not get the work that you want, you have to create it and think that they need to hire you.  I’m still waiting for Charlotte Tillbury to call me.

Show up on time or at least 1  hour before your call time.  I was chastised by my teacher that “when you show up on time, that means you are late”.  Show up 30 minutes to one hour before and you are really on time.    As a professional, there is nothing worse than the client waiting on you because you are late for various reasons.  A client can mean from the beauty editor or stylist, model or the photographer and they show up on time.  If you are late, apologize once and get on with the work.  Even if the others are late, make sure you arrive early and believe me, this will give you a heads up on your next booking.

Professional can also mean appropriately dressed.  I’ve seen other makeup artists that come in very casual attire sometimes too casual.  I’m referring to short shorts and a mini top.  While this may look good, it will also reflect on the image that you want to convey as a professional artist.  I have also seen some artists that wear sky high stilettos to a shoot.  This can wreak havoc on your poor feet and expensive shoes specially when the shoot is outdoors in a rice field and you are in multiple location settings.  Ditch your club attire and wear the comfiest of shoes and for heavens sake you are not there to compete with the model in terms of pabonggahan.  Show your creative side but keep it professional by being well groomed and presentable.

Professional can also mean on how you deal with the client and the people around you.  While we are surrounded by very colorful personalities in a shoot or a set, one can’t help that colorful language, colloquial terms and showbiz lingo are thrown around, it is still important to have a pleasing and courteous personality. Do not assume that when someone speaks to you in gay lingo, make sure that when you reply back, that person receiving it will also understand where you re coming from.  Sometimes it comes off as trying too hard.  Say “thank you” and “please,” being considerate of others and minding your manners are not old fashioned norms.  I’ve heard other editors say that they have not booked a particular makeup artist because of her poor social skills and bad manners.  Trust me, bad manners is always committed to the memory bank of the people concerned.

Be punctual. Allow yourself time to arrive early and set up. Wait for the client and not the other way around.

4)  Respect yourself and your craft

Never undersell or underestimate your potential.  Wise words from a previous mentor.

Sad to say the industry is changing and everyone wants a piece of the proverbial beauty pie.  I have come across makeup artists that undersell themselves just to get the client sometimes charging rates that are way below the industry rate.  It is a dog eat dog world today.  Whew!

Respecting your craft means that you have invested time: the school attended; the hours you’ve put in your work to carve a name for yourself — that involves charging rates that are appropriate for the event and the needs of the client.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve taken on jobs that don’t pay me at all but this is the choice I made in terms of getting ahead and weighing it against my portfolio or resume building.  For instance I’v been volunteering my services every year for the past 2 years to East Avenue Hospital where I get to beautify patients dealing with cancer.  Sometimes its really not all about the money.  Cliche as it may sound, the women I get to work with are the happiest, grateful ladies I’ve put my hands on and that is worth any peso can pay me.  In some cases, working on an editorial shoot will get you an “X deal” wherein credits are used instead of monetary benefits.  I usually don’t turn it down if I know I can get beautiful photos for my website.

5)  Have a sense of rumor…  um, I meant HUMOR.

It really is just makeup.  You can easily remove it just as easily as you put it on.  Creativity, fun and passion go hand in hand and please do not take yourself seriously.  I learned that there will always someone better than you and the biggest  competitor is really yourself.  Makeup = Color = Fun= Passion =  Happiness.  The photo below is really a good poke at our profession which just about sums up what I do.  Enjoy and keep on painting.

Makeup Virgin

This is a guest post by Martine de Luna of Makeitblissful.com

I’m what you call a “makeup virgin.” I never learned how to put on makeup, even though I really, really wanted to, later on in my, er, early twenties. I missed the whole phase between middle and high school, when everyone learned to apply makeup. That said, I went to a school that didn’t care much for makeup, anyway, so it probably wasn’t on my mind back then.

Ironically, I end up working with Acie Fores, makeup artist, and suddenly, I am thrust into a world of makeup. Each week, we talk about her love for the craft, the best products on the market, and the kinds of looks she loves to create. I find it fascinating how she is able to transform plain Janes like me into all-out glam babes!

Well, I was honest with her about my little dilemma, and asked her to give me a once-over makeup virgin makeover. My request? That the makeup be easy to put on, even for a “makeup virgin” like me!

The Virgin Face

I don’t wear makeup at all, not even on dates. Yes, seriously. However, I know I would look better with a little enhancement, simply because I do have some features that people often compliment me for. The best, they say? My eyes! Ironically, they are my biggest area of doubt when it comes to makeup, because I never know what to do with them. Good thing Acie had some tips for me, as well as some product recommendations for how to make them stand out.

Makeup by Acie
Products Used: Base — L’Oreal perfecting base; Foundation — Benefit Oxygen Wow (Martine’s own); Concealer — Fanny Serrano; Powder — Sephora Loose Powder; Eyes — MAC; Eyeliner — Makeup Forever; Blush — MAC; Lips — Terra Gloss (Martine’s own)

Makeup Virgin Lessons

Here’s what I learned from Acie about my face, and how to ensure that my makeup feels natural to me, both how to do it and what kind of products to use.

1. When applying a makeup, always do so in natural light. Because I tend to look like a geisha when I apply makeup on my own, this is a great tip.

2. Foundation tip: When using foundation, I should use a brush, not a sponge. I need to make sure to smoothen the foundation past my jawline, down to my neck, so that the tone gives me even coverage (and I don’t look pale).

3. Blush tip: Since I don’t want to look like a clown, Acie recommended using a blush that was closer to my natural skin tone/hue, which was more on the brown side, not the pink/red side. I should focus more on the contours of my face, not on the actual cheekbones.

4. Eyeshadow tip: My biggest misconception about eyeshadow is that it is difficult to put on, and so I just never bothered with it. But hey, I look damn good with it, so I should make the effort to use it more! The solution? Practice. That’s it! I just have to commit to study the contours of my eyes and their natural shape, so that I’ll know how to make the products work for me.

5. Makeup know-how is all about knowing what works for you. Learning how to do my own makeup meant (1) being willing to learn one more new thing, and (2) not being afraid to take some risks. I’m usually good with both learning things and taking risks, but I suppose this was such an emotional thing for me, it took me some time to face up to it. Since Acie gave me this tutorial, I’ve even been trying to do my makeup on my own, but I still need more practice! Still, I’m glad I took on the challenge, because now, I feel like I can accomplish anything.

My High Pasyon Day with Miss Jen Delica

There is a famous saying that “You are good as your last work/deal/job/success and the list of nouns go on.  Part of the process of getting ahead of your game is through continuous learning which comes in many forms.  For me, its through the classes. forums, OJT training, apprenticing with a mentor or whatever the case may be and I was able to secure a slot with one of my highly respected teachers Jen Delica of Proface Palettes and Pigments for a High Fashion Editorial class.  The photo of Miss Teresa Herrera was our inspiration for an editorial peg.  Miss Delica worked on this May 2011 Rogue cover.

It is a rare opportunity to obtain a slot with her due to her numerous commitments both here and abroad for her highly prized skills in the beauty and fashion industry.  The bulk of her work is seen on many TV commercials, videos and documentaries like Discovery Channel (and did I mention, she worked on the Bourne Legacy movie set filmed here a few years ago?) to name a few.  I can’t even begin to describe how great this woman is, and may I add very humble and respectful too.   Rare qualities you find in a celebrity-kind-of- way-makeup artist you see nowadays whose egos are so inflated as their ginormous makeup trolley.  She was my teacher a year ago when I took up a High Definition class with her.  Her vast wealth of knowledge, technical artistry and experience is what takes your ego down a peg or two to as she has turned my perception of makeup artistry upside down.

I am not going to reveal the details of the class, as I highly recommend you or the makeup artist reading this, to simply take her class and see for herself what I mean by turning your perception of makeup application upside down.   This class is not for beginners as one is expected to have a basic understanding of color theory and makeup application under her belt.  This class is meant to teach you how to improve your skills and learn her technique of makeup application.  She begins by asking you questions about what it is you want to learn and improve on and you bring photos of the looks you want to recreate and then proceed from there.  In a nutshell, you go out of this class armed with the understanding that makeup application is not about slap dashing makeup colours on the face but rather an intelligent capability that it is a technical skill that one has to master.  It’s all about the face and seeing how you can be an expert in disguising and creating that perfect illusion that is beauty in the eye of the beholder.

I showed her a couple of my editorial projects, which she critiqued and mentioned there is room for improvement pa rin.  In gay lingo, konting keribels pa.  Of course she meant it in a good way!

Lesson of the day:  Easy Smoky Look

In all photos except the last one, the left side of her face was done by Miss Delica while the right side was done my me.

Makeup Must-Do’s for the new year

beauty_resolutions

It’s still January, and it’s a good a time as any to make some New Year changes, especially in our makeup habits and beauty routines. By now, you should have at least made the following “makeup resolutions.” If you haven’t, there’s still time to get your good habit hat on!

We’ve just got three all-important tips. We promise if you get these right,  your skin will thank you for it!

Makeup Must-Do’s

1. Get enough SLEEP.

I know we’re all busy, and that we all resolve to get more sleep, come the new year, every year! But we can’t stress the importance of enough sleep. Sleep helps our natural canvas — our skin — get the rest and nourishment it needs. In fact, according to research, sleep has the following benefits:

  • It helps the brain recharge so that it can store new information (And we all know intelligence is beautiful!)
  • It regularizes our metabolism, helping us keep a steady weight (Health is beautiful!)
  • It makes us less prone to make mistakes and errors, because rest helps us to be more alert.
  • It improves our mood: We’re less cranky and spiteful when we get enough sleep. (Of course, a good character is inner beauty!)
  • It’s good for our heart health.
  • It helps prevent autoimmune diseases like cancer. Uh-huh, that’s right: Getting enough sleep actually reduces our risk for cancer.

(These points based on research are all from the Harvard Medical School. )

2. Wash off your makeup before you sleep!

We found this article on the Telegraph UK which pretty much explains why we should wash off our makeup before we go to sleep at night. The results are, uhm, not pretty (no pun intended). Just watch it, and we promise you that you will always wash off your makeup!

Here’s a good step-by-step video guide on proper makeup removal: How to Remove Your Makeup by wikiHow

3. Wear sunscreen.

A lot of us in the Philippines forget this important step in our skincare regimen. Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach, y’all. With our tropical heat and harsh sunlight, we all need to wear at least 30SPF sun protection on our face. This is especially important for those who work in front of computers all day, too: Monitors and screens emit UV rays which can cause premature skin aging! So yes, even at the office, you still need to apply sunscreen.

2014 Color of the Year – Radiant Orchid (and how to use it in your makeup arsenal)

Color-of-the-year
“An invitation to innovation, radiant orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.” Photo from Pantone.com

Happy New year, everyone!  This Year, Pantone unveils its colour of the year which is Radiant Orchid, a mix of pink and purple, which is flattering on most skin tones.   According to Pantone’s Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman, the reason why this colour was chosen was because Radiant evokes sheen and magic like an amethyst with its many facets, a beguiling charm that pulls you in.   Orchid has an exotic and complex mystery that encourages you to innovate  and be creative giving that touch of uniqueness.

Here are some bridal inspirations for you to consider when you’re planning your wedding this year.  Personally, if you choose this as your colour theme, it will look so exotic and different from the usual pastels, nude and blush.  For us Pinays, the lavender and berry hue is a perfect complement to our Malay skin tones which can carry its darker tones or hues.  For those with Light to Fair skin tones, you may use lighter hues in pinks and violet.  All these strong colours may be toned down with browns, taupes, beige to also warm it up.

A favourite eye makeup palette that I use is the one from Nars, called the Bridal palette in 9945 which reflects this colour trend.  Unfortunately, it is no longer carried by Nars but try to secure one online through Ebay or Amazon.  I’ve used these colours on so many brides and it is truly flattering.  It gives you a break from all the neutral colours like browns and taupes but it still reads as a neutral colour on every skin tone.

The colors are very subtle but you can use the palette to transform a day look into a smokey darker look in the evenings.  The eye colours are Nepal, Ondine, Edie and Night Fever and the most desired blush, Orgasm.  It has Mitzi, Baby Doll, Sexual Healing and Roman Holiday for lip colours.  You may look up the colours on your own as I’m not good at describing the colours.

Nepal, Ondine are good day colours, and Night fever mixed with Ondine and Edie are good colours for a night out.  I hope the photo below will give you an idea on how this palette can be used in your beauty routine, the best part is, we already have these colours in multiples.

This Bridal Palette is a staple in my kit.

Below are my makeup colours that may be interpreted for this colour trend.  See what I mean we have it in multiples?  If you don’t have any of these yet, start with either a bold lipstick or try a nail colour to see if you like it on yourself.   It also can be paired with olive and hunter greens, turquoise and teal, light yellows, gray, beige and taupe.  Be bold and daring, who knows this could be your colour too.
